December 15th, 2010farmers market, LA restaurants
not sure if you’ve been keeping track of the dramz, but the hollywood farmers market (home of the beloved taste of life breakfast sandwich) is being threatened.

la film school is trying to shut down the market, and we CANNOT LET THIS HAPPEN. seriously, this would be a huge blow to the vegan community considering how many vegan-friendly stands and vendors operate there.
check out the article on LAist.com about how you can help TODAY, before the meeting with city officials tomorrow. PLEASE DO YOUR PART!

December 15th, 2010california pizza kitchen, LA restaurants
i think it’s great when huge chain restaurants make the effort to have vegan-friendly items on their menu, and that’s exactly what california pizza kitchen has done. we checked out cpk at the beverly center recently, and i’m happy to report that it was super easy to order a ton of animal-free food, and everything we ate was delicious.

i can imagine that for people who live in some parts of the country, cpk is a godsend…not every city is like los angeles, with a vegan restaurant on every corner. cpk has hundreds of locations all over the country, and they’ve clearly posted their vegetarian and vegan information online for everyone to see. i love that they’ve done that! it saves all the guesswork of quizzing the waiters and/or emailing the corporate office.

December 14th, 2010doomie's, LA restaurants
the wait is over! doomie’s home cookin’ is officially open for business. right now their hours are tuesday through sunday from noon to 10pm, and at the moment they are cash only…so go prepared. we checked them out over their opening weekend, and as usual the food was insane. have a look at what we ordered, and scroll to the bottom of the post to see the full doomie’s menu.

deciding what to eat was a challenge, because everything at doomie’s sounded so damn good. the appetizer selection was ridiculous…from jalapeno poppers, to buffalo legs, to chili cheese fries…i wanted it all! we practiced some restraint though, and decided to split just two main courses.

December 12th, 2010hugo's restaurant, LA restaurants
i am in love with the december specials at hugo’s restaurant, and the best one i’ve tried yet is the south of the border casserole.

a hearty blend of slow-cooked vegetables, spices, and (in my case) tofu, this dish has everything going for it. plus, it’s pretty big, and comes served with a giant mound of brown rice for the mixin’…

December 12th, 2010hard times pizza co, LA restaurants
UPDATE 12/21: we have found that hard times pizza uses follow your heart as their vegan cheese. also, we tried it and it was AWESOME.
it’s time for another quick bite! this one comes to us from trishells, who recently hit up hard times in silverlake. the pizzeria has recently started serving vegan pizza, and according to some tweeps, it’s available by the SLICE. whoa. we aren’t sure what vegan cheese they are using, but people who have eaten it are saying it seems like the new teese. we are gonna try to get to the bottom of the cheese brand issue and report back. as we know, it’s a pretty important thing to find out. meanwhile, here’s trishells’ review!

my new favorite pizza is at Hard Times! on a lazy saturday night i ordered vegan pizza for pick up with garlic, jalapenos, mushrooms, and olives…

December 9th, 2010clean street food, LA restaurants

there was a new food truck on the block during lunch today – which is a big deal to me because my options for food, especially within walking distance, are limited and starting to get a little old. so i strolled by the clean street food truck because i heard they had a vegan sandwich. and GUESS WHAT, they do!

December 8th, 2010LA restaurants, recipes, spork foods
this holiday season, i can’t think of a better gift to give anybody than a membership to spork online. the website was launched last month by the sisters at spork foods and features an array of vegan resources including HD video cooking classes, downloadable recipes, a section to get your questions answered, and more.
let me back this up a bit. the spork sisters, jenny and heather, and their popular los angeles cooking classes have been on my radar for quite a while; both vegans and omnivores alike have raved about them, saying they are all kinds of fun and super informative. i even got a chance to try the spork sisters’ fantastic food at the launch party for their new space, and was instantly smitten.

i’ve always wanted to take one of their classes, but the thing is, i’m super shy. i’m also not very good at cooking, so hanging out in a room with lots of other humans who are better in the kitchen than i am seemed liked it could be intimidating. imagine how excited i was when i heard that jenny and heather were launching spork online. a place where i can browse videos of different classes, watch how to make individual recipes, and ask the sisters questions if i run into trouble…all in the privacy of my own home?! YES, PLEASE!
here’s what a membership will getcha:

December 6th, 2010LA restaurants, native foods
hey everyone! tuesday and wednesday of this week, native foods is kicking off “native days,” their monthly celebration of the environment, animals, and food.

Turkey Loves Rye Sandwich: Organic toasted marble rye stacked with warmed thinly sliced seitan, native stuffing, cranberry orange sauce, shredded lettuce, and dijon mayo. Served with a side of mushroom shallot gravy. $9.95
to get you in the mood to party, they’ve got a new special holiday entree called the turkey loves rye sandwich, available exclusively for native days (this tuesday and wednesday only!). you better go eat this thing, because it sounds insane: thinly sliced seitan, stuffing, cranberry sauce, lettuce and dijon mayo on marble rye with mushroom gravy. it’s a crime that it will only be offered for two days!
native foods will also be debuting two new desserts…

December 3rd, 2010LA restaurants, sweet e's, vegan bakers
we all know vegans LOVE cupcakes and now LA folks can get their fix at the newly-opened sweet e’s storefront in beverly hills.

we have been fans of the tiny treats from sweet e’s mini bakeshop for a while now, so we were super excited when we heard they were getting a brick and mortar location, and would stock at least one vegan flavor daily. i checked out the cute new store earlier this week and as usual the desserts were delicious…

November 30th, 2010Cobblermania, LA restaurants, vegan bakers
hey everyone! time for a reader review by leigh about an awesome all vegan los angeles cobbler stand called cobblermania. i’ve never tried their food, but this place appears to be a bit of a moving target, operating everyday at the NE corner of la brea and venice…as well at various farmers markets including hollywood, mar vista, torrance, culver city, downtown LA, and san dimas. the best way to track these guys down/get their hours is to call (323) 316-4793. i called them at 8:30pm on a weeknight, and they picked up and were ready to answer any questions about their schedule. from the looks of this review, they are definitely worth checking out. i know i am gonna make it a point to visit them soon!

Cobbler Mania is a cobbler stand on the NE side of the intersection between La Brea and Venice and it promises to be “So Good You’ll (Want To) Slap Somebody!”. They’re not out there every single day but they were today and were prominently displaying a tempting “$5.00 Cobbler Sale” sign…

i’ve tried several things on the stuff i eat menu, and have never once been disappointed. every plate seems to be overflowing with colorful organic goodness that looks and tastes amazing.
