July 3rd, 2011bay area, more restaurants (not LA), san francisco
i love sandwiches. i’ve probably eaten thousands of them in my life…and this may very well be the best.
dinosaurs in san francisco is a somewhat new hole in the wall joint in the castro. the menu is small, and they’ve only got one vegan sandwich…but that one sanwich is guaranteed to blow your mind. let me introduce you to their ridiculously good tofu vietnamese offering…

July 1st, 2011cruzer pizza, LA restaurants
this is good news by any measure. one of our favorite vegan restaurants in los angeles,
cruzer pizza, is under new management….and the food is even better! they’ve completely redone the place and the menu, with improvements all around! don’t worry, they still have a pizza named after me—but it’s even tastier now (if you can believe it)! the first thing you’ll notice when you walk into the new and improved cruzer, is a stylish chalkboard menu that has taken over the left side of the counter. new items include starters like potato skins, inventive pasta dishes, a chicken cheesesteak sandwich…
they’ve even got mexicoke…
and several flavors of luscious organics cupcakes…
now, let’s get down to what we ordered. we ordered a lot. first up, who can resist potato skins…
potato skins: marinara and daiya inside potato skins. $5.99

i am absolutely in love with goody good stuff! the vegetarian UK based company makes the best gelatin-free gummy candies i’ve ever tried. i haven’t had chewy sweets this authentic tasting in so long, i forgot how much i used to love them.
although goody good stuff uses beeswax in some of their products, they have some entirely vegan varieties which include cola breeze, summer peaches, and sour fruit salad. i’ve tried all three, and it’s impossible to choose a favorite.

yes, yes, YES!! doomie’s may have been temporarily thwarted and shut down due to an electrical fire…but that’s not gonna stop them from throwing an epic all you can eat buffet this holiday weekend to use up their food. WE CANNOT LET THAT FOOD GO BAD, RIGHT? we all need to hit up this buffet.
crazy vegan stuff from doomie's: croissants, "pulled pork" sandwich, "fried chicken", gorgeous dessert things.
plus, a mere ten bucks for a bottomless serving of the insanity that is doomie’s cuisine is just way too good to pass up, no matter what the circumstances. here are the details:

this is the moment i’ve been waiting for…finally, a vegan secret supper club in los angeles! “a moveable feast” is a limited seating, gourmet, underground dinner series created by kim garr of c’est la vegan/c’est la v bakeshop and alix bannon of cute and delicious/vegan bake sale that takes place once a month at a secret location. they implement a “pay what you want” policy, with the suggested amount being between $75-$125. for that you get a stunning 5 course meal along with a signature cocktail (non-alcoholic version available) in an intimate speakeasy setting. their next dinner, which will feature mediterranean cuisine, is scheduled for july 9th at 7pm somewhere in studio city. you can make reservations via email, but there are only 6 spaces available, so act fast!
i was lucky enough to attend the inaugural movable feast last month, and i can honestly say it was one of the finest meals i’ve ever eaten. six guests gathered around a long dining table, made friendly conversation, and enjoyed course after course of incredible vegan food for over three hours. here’s a look at what we ate. special thanks to little vegan planet…who took all the amazing photos in this post, except the one of the lemonade!
homemade lemonade, served alcoholic or non
upon arrival, guests were served a glass of homemade lemonade with or without alcohol. i ordered mine sans the booze, and it was absolutely lovely. cool and refreshing, perfect for a warm evening.

June 28th, 2011stores, vegan stuff
whoa, i can’t believe this crazy day and age in which we live! the folks behind two of the best vegan restaurants in the country, candle cafe and candle 79 (both located in manhattan), have now created a frozen brand that’s available at whole foods right here in los angeles.
as of last week, two of candle’s new dinners were available at whole foods in beverly hills: seitan piccata with lemon caper sauce and ginger miso stir fry. we have professed our love for both candle cafe’s and candle 79’s seitan in the past…so i was anxious to try it in convenient, microwaved form.

June 28th, 2011cut, LA restaurants
i simply couldn’t believe it a couple weeks ago when i received an email from a reader named ashlee raving about the vegan options at cut steakhouse in beverly hills! apparently she’d been dragged there for a family function, and found that the restaurant offered a 3 course meal just for vegans. as she pointed out in her message, “Although I am positive that no vegan would ever willingly dine at CUT, I thought I’d inform you of this in case you or any of your blog readers are stuck in a situation (like I was) where they have to attend a steakhouse.” luckily for us, ashlee found herself back at cut recently with some guests from out of town, and she sent me some snaps of her meal to post on the blog. enjoy! hopefully this will come in handy next time you have to go to a fancy dinner with omnivores in beverly hills.
I had dinner at Cut and it was just as amazing as last time. I let the chef pick this time again because it was so good last time. The waiters at Cut are surprisingly knowledgeable about veganism…I mentioned I was a vegan and the waiter said “are you a full vegan or just a vegetarian? If you are a full vegan, I will be sure that nothing will have dairy in it and will bring some bread to the table that isn’t made with eggs or butter”.
First course: summer bean salad with veggies and pine nuts and a tahini dressing…
Second course: mushroom and shishito peppers in this asian sauce, caramelized summer corn, green bean mixture with sun dried tomatoes, and various greens/peas with caramelized onions…

on saturday we teamed up with our pals from tony’s darts away and the roxy to present the second LA vegan beer fest, and it was a blast! attendees enjoyed unlimited pours of craft beer from breweries such as stone, deschutes, eagle rock, north coast, and many more…live music from great local bands…and a huge selection of vegan food from doomie’s, seabirds, mandoline grill, fresh fries, veg it up, the frankenstand, the mad kettler, and luscious organic desserts.
we’ve got loads of photos from the event, so sit back and enjoy. if you didn’t make it to the vegan beer fest this time around, seriously don’t miss the next one! doomie himself was wandering the fest dressed up like a rabbit and showing off his new vegan corn dogs. here’s a photo of him taken by little vegan planet…

BAD, BAD, BAD FUCKING NEWS PEOPLE! doomie’s home cookin’, by far the best vegetarian restaurant in town, had an electrical fire today and is closed until further notice. because they are insanely amazing people, they will still be at the LAVBF this weekend, but their vine location will not remain open at the moment.
they need our help, tonight if possible!

June 23rd, 2011more restaurants (not LA), san francisco, vegan events
there’s a huge rivalry between the san francisco giants and philadelphia phillies, and i’m not referring to something as trivial as baseball. nope, i’m talking about which home stadium has the best vegan beer and food options. cititzens bank park in philly topped peta’s most vegetarian-friendly stadium list for years, only to be beat in 2011 by san francisco’s AT&T park. kevin of vegan brew brought us a vegan major league baseball report from philly in may, and he went to a giants game a couple nights ago just to do a firsthand comparison. let’s see how san fran measured up…
garlic fries. $7.25 and beer. $9.75
Here are the vegan options at Giants Stadium…
