another one bites the dust! after just a couple of months, savyon cafe on pico has decided to discontinue their all you can eat vegan sunday buffet.

the restaurant still offers a sunday buffet, but now there’s no separation between meat, dairy, and vegan items. bummer.

savyon claims there wasn’t enough interest in the vegan buffet, which is strange because people were always emailing me about it, and discussing it on the facebooks. oh well, at least we still have rahel! go eat there!

  • too bad, went there twice. planned to go again but won’t!

Shucks, that RIP plate looks excellent 🙁

  • If you call ahead any time the owner Savi will whip up what ever you want. We call ahead for oil-free Jerusalem salad / pita and babaganoush / even oil -free low fat potato curry made with coconut water instead of the milk. Savi does an amazing job, but has to do what ever is financially best for him and the vegan buffet didn’t cut it. In a different location I think he’d have had something.

  • I’ve come here about three times now and the vegan buffet was always very poorly attended. I can understand where they are coming from. It’s in the business’ best interest to keep themselves from going under. A lot of people talk about this place, but I never see many people actually in there…had they been in a different part of town, they’d be packed for brunch every Sunday for sure.

  • Yeah, the location was less than ideal. Also, I wasn’t entirely sure it was still going on due to the on again/off again first couple of weeks. Then again, I didn’t really do much research.

  • We’ve eaten there on Sundays about five or six times now and noticed that the vegan buffet selection was starting to go downhill (which could explain why attendance was slacking). What started off as a great value ended up (this past Sunday) becoming a “meh” value. During our visit this past Sunday, the vegan options were basically side dishes except for one panini option (after a thirty minute wait).

No ill will toward the owner about the new course they’re taking but we still won’t be coming back.

  • I went to the buffet twice and loved it, but I understand them discontinuing it. I’m sure it was just a money thing, since they couldn’t have been more friendly to veggies. I’ll still go there for their regular menu for sure.

  • I never had a good feeling at that place. While the food was good, I never felt comfortable around the people working behind the counter. They may blame the lack of support by vegans for the reason for adding dairy and meat to the buffet, but they really have to look at themselves before simply pointing the finger at others. Also, when I went, the women’s bathroom was out of order, and my friend told me it wasn’t working 3 weeks before that also. I ended up using the men’s bathroom (and certainly not by choice, as it needed to be cleaned). “The vegans aren’t supporting us, so let’s add all you can eat dead animals to the buffet instead of providing a better experience for everyone to retain them”. Scary thought. I did tell several of my meat eating friend about that place to try to show them that vegan food could taste really good, so I helped them to get more meat eaters that are interested in vegan food.

  • the food really wasn’t that great. went there once and was not impressed.

  • Thank you! I’m glad I was not the only one that wasn’t that impressed with the Sunday vegan buffet. I just had an overall impression that the place wasn’t very clean and kept up.

  • How ironic, the Rahel link is dead! Hopefully it’s just that the extra traffic from this blog temporarily sent them over quota. 😛

  • We went once and hadn’t been back before they stopped. It was boiling hot inside and very uncomfortable and that made it difficult to enjoy the food.

The food wasn’t marked and not being familiar with some of it, we gave it nicknames, brown mush, green mush, red mush, etc.

They were out of several items and said that it was their signature dishes and they were preparing more. It took quite a while for the food to be done and when they put it out, everyone ran up to get it and it was gone. We did get a little of each to split and we didn’t really enjoy it.

Some of the dishes were next to each other, which made it look like they went together but one of the items was out. So, we could get a pasta with no sauce or a sauce without something to put it on.

We did enjoy the grapes leaves and several of the different types of mush and was hoping to give it another try.

The staff was really nice and said they offer vegan items on their main menu but no one ever orders off of it. I didn’t look at the menu so I don’t know what they offer.

I’d still like to give it another try and see what they can whip up for us.

  • I am really surprised to see some negative comments about Savyon. Not arguing against them, i am just really surprised. I love the place and the staff has always been wonderful. Its not a luxurious place but its always been fine and the food has been great.

I am a dyed in the wool carnivore and their vegan buffet was still one of my favorite lunch treats. I will still go to the new buffet, but I was a little bummed the vegan one ended.

  • Its a shame.

We came here last Sunday. As usual it was fantastic. the vegan selection was the same as always (about 15 dishes) plus two separate chicken dishes and one with cheese panini. we were group of seven people only four vegans.we all had what we wanted and great time. It was our sixth time at the buffet and we will keep coming. Its by far the best deal in LA, culinary and monetary wise.
I can’t believe the negative comments about Savyon, both the friendly service and the food could not be any better. (some agenda must be in play with these comments)we been here many times and it was obvious that it was coming.Yes. Vegans Talked about it but very few really showed up. We were very surprised to learn that the Quarry Girl never visited Savyon.

  • I’m disappointed to hear this being discontinued as well. I’m an omnivore and their vegan brunch was actually the only thing that I ate there. It’s one of the best vegan meals I’ve had in LA. I’d heard at one time they had talked about making restaurant all vegan. I think that would be a great idea.

  • Quarrygirl said: savyon claims there wasn’t enough interest in the vegan buffet above. So the owner added meat and dairy to the buffet..
Maybe it was because of the creepy people working there that vegans didn’t support them. They may have felt the need to add meat because of “lack of vegan interest”. I think they added meat because vegans evacuated because of their attitude, so they felt the need to add meat to try to bring another crowd in. What don’t you understand?

On a side note, I converted to veganism 9 months ago. I lost over 30lbs too. Thanks for pointing me to all the cool places, Quarrygirl! You’re so awesome!!

  • lol…looks like the owners may have posted the comment from “Nancy Bell”

hahaha… “it was obvious that it was coming”. Obvious that they were going to switch the buffet to a meat buffet? Was this obvious to any of us that tried the buffet that it was going to have meat at the buffet one random weekend?

Also..the language throughout is really suspicious.

example “The friendly service and food could not be any better” “by far the best deal in LA”

    suspicious.
