…so go eat it ASAP. i’m sure you’ve already heard the news: pure luck is closing for good, and we are freaking out. there’ll be so much to miss about the vegan east hollywood eatery: the impressive beer list, the crispy potato pals, the deep fried pickle chips, and most of all….the jackfruit.

May 15th, 2011hugo's restaurant, LA restaurants
usually quick bites are submitted by readers, but today i have one of my own. friday was the six year anniversary of my husband and i’s first date…and we decided to celebrate in true QG style: by hitting up a bar and a restaurant. we started off at our favorite local pub, the surly goat, and then took a 15 minute stroll down the road to hugo’s for some eats. i’m happy to report that everything was lovely.

May 11th, 2011LA restaurants, larkin's
UPDATE: larkin’s has discontinued their vegan menu! sad, sad.
couple-o-months ago, QG and i hit up larkin’s in eagle rock. one thing i reeeally wanted to try was the pot pie, but they were OUT. i was heartbroken. the meal i ended up getting (mac and cheese) was delicious, but fresh veggies and faux chicken sandwiched between two flaky biscuits would have warmed my little soul. i thought about pot pie for weeks – months, even – and then like some birthday miracle, i found myself at larkin’s recovering from one of my birthday parties. and this time they had pot pie!
vegan chix pot pie: soy and rice based sauce with peas, onions, garlic, potatoes, and soy chicken with vegan biscuit. $10
i ate this thing in record time, it was sooooo good! i could probably eat 1,000,000 of those biscuits. MAYBE i will!

May 9th, 2011LA restaurants, the spot
there’s something for everybody at the spot in hermosa beach. whether you are looking for insanely decadent fare, or something light and healthy, the entirely vegetarian cozy beach cafe has got you covered. breakfast, lunch, dinner, beer, wine, you name it…the spot’s got it! we hit them up over the weekend, and as usual, absolutely loved our meal. plus, the spot is just a short walk away from naja’s place, one of our favorite beach area bars. nothing like a good old fashioned pub and grub.
soup of the day: lima bean! $4.95
we started our meal off with the soup of the day, which was lima bean, and it was excellent. super chunky and filled right up with chopped vegetables and hearty beans. all of the soups at the spot are extra healthy and oil-free, so i really should have gotten a full bowl of it instead of just a cup. when my spoon hit the bottom, i was still wanting more.

this is GREAT news for the los angeles vegan world. kay ‘n dave’s, a mexican restaurant that we love in culver city, is now experimenting with daiya vegan cheese…and if it does well, they’re gonna carry it at all their locations!

May 2nd, 2011LA restaurants, pure luck (closed)
time to bust out the tissues, because this shit is getting real. on friday we blogged about a rumor on blogging LA that one of our favorite vegan restaurants, pure luck, would soon be closing. well now the writing….er, sign…is on the wall as pure luck has posted an official public notice of application for ownership change.

May 2nd, 2011LA restaurants, shojin
if you are looking for a restaurant in los angeles to celebrate a special occasion with a ton of pals, shojin is your place! the all vegan japanese spot has incredible food and a fancy vibe (despite being located on the top floor of a mall), plus they now serve alcohol. we hit up shojin over the weekend with a few friends to celebrate brittany’s birthday, and it was a blast. the beer was flowing and we got to try a slew of new menu items. party!
spicy rock shiitake tempura: tempura shiitake mushrooms with spicy wasabi mayonnaise. $6.95
because they are the best mushrooms on earth, we started with a few rounds of shojin’s spicy rock shiitake tempura appetizer. deep fried nuggets of goodness topped off with spicy mayo, we were popping this things like candy. seriously, we just kept ordering more rounds of mushrooms for the table because we couldn’t get enough.
maitake mushroom tempura: crispy maitake mushroom tempura served with yuzu citrus pepper sauce. $6.95
we also got an order of the maitake mushroom tempura, which i’d never had before. they tasted great, but they were super heavy in that deep-fried kinda way, so be warned.

April 30th, 2011LA restaurants, savyon cafe
the all you can eat vegan buffet at savyon that takes place every sunday is going to raise its prices. that means tomorrow is the last day to get it for just $8.99. vegans apparently eat A LOT, so savyon is upping the price by 2 bucks, but they are also adding dessert to the buffet…so i guess it all evens out.

April 29th, 2011LA restaurants, pure luck (closed)
earlier today we blogged that madeleine bistro will be closing next month…and now sean bonner at blogging los angeles brings us the horrible news that pure luck, another one of our favorite restaurants, may be shuttering as well.
according to sean’s “legit” tip off, the restaurant will be closing in around a month and reopening as a wine bar. NOT COOL. we have had some petty complaints about pure luck in the past…but if the truth be told, they’re one of the best vegan restaurants around. they have amazing jackfruit that doubles as carnitas and pulled-pork, not to mention an amazing selection of craft beer.
PURE LUCK, PLEASE DON’T CLOSE. we love you. 🙁

April 29th, 2011LA restaurants, madeleine bistro
UPDATE 5/6/11: due to vegans going psycho, madeleine bistro has decided to move their closing day until may 22nd! take advantage, people. they are only open 3 days a week for 2 more weeks. make it count.
well, this is quite distressing. madeleine bistro, our favorite vegan restaurant in all the land, took to their facebook page at 3am to announce their closure. say it ain’t so!
in a note titled “madeleine bistro closing details”, they wrote…
