zephyr cafe goes all vegan!

rah rah! in the midst of all these horrible LA vegan restaurant closures, we’re happy that we finally have some good news to share: zephyr cafe in long beach has decided to dump the dairy!
the small vegetarian cafe has been our go-to spot in the LBC for years, and even though we have had varied experiences in the past, we just keep coming back. when we hit them up about a week ago, i stepped up to the counter and ordered the usual: “a steamed vegetable bowl, please, and an MF burger. oh, and please make sure to use vegan cheese on the burger!” the dude behind the counter was all like, “no worries. we’re actually 100% vegan now, so we don’t even carry real cheese.” SCORE!
our meal was excellent, and i can’t tell if it’s because zephyr brought their a-game to the kitchen that night, or because i was high on the newly found vegan vibes. we split both dishes between the two of us, and they were great for different reasons. the burger (pictured at the top of the post) was fat and juicy with its homemade patty, grilled onions, and creamy slice of tofutti cheese.
the vegetable bowl was simple, but delicious—loads of fresh broccoli, zucchini, carrots and beansprouts over brown rice with a tangy lemon vinaigrette. the perfect compliment to the hearty burger. i forget the exact prices of this stuff (and there’s no up-to-date menu available online), but i believe the whole meal was around $12ish?
a couple days after our trip to zephyr, i called them to confirm the good news, and was told that “yep, they are 100% vegan now. no more cheese in the restaurant!” how great is that?! i just love it when restaurants drop animal products off their menu. i haven’t been this happy since 2009.
vegans, go eat at zephyr! let’s all show them that we support and appreciate their decision!

yay! zephyr is right down the street from me, but i’ve never been. now i have even more incentive to visit!

we went there a month ago and had an awesome lunch. salads, veggie burgers, etc…everything tasted fresh and they put a unique spin on their stuff.

Zephyr has been on my “want to try” list for a long time. But this news settles it, I’m making a point to go ASAP. Great decision Zephyr!

Quarrygirl! Did you try the escargot(sp?)?!?!?! I ordered it because I thought it was a strange item to see on a vegan menu, and it was soooooo good and “buttery”.

We go their every weekend and Zephyr keeps getting better and better. They have also have these breakfast burritos they do on Sunday mornings that are AMAZING!
