November 24th, 2010LA restaurants, tony's darts away
do we really need another reason to love tony’s darts away? the incredibly vegan-friendly bar already has one of the best beer selections and some of the tastiest food in town. now you are telling me they even indicate on the menu which beers are vegan?! this is unheard of.

November 23rd, 2010chili addiction, LA restaurants
i couldn’t even believe it when i went to chili addiction recently and saw they had a new menu item named after ME. the quarrygirl burger combines two of my favorite dishes—the hearty match-based burger and johnny’s insane homemade sauerkraut. of course, i had to order it!

quarrygirl: our fantastic vegan burger topped with homemade sauerkraut. $10
wow! i’m not just saying this because the burger had my name on it, but the quarrygirl was epic!…

November 23rd, 2010LA restaurants, mac and cheeza
over the summer i spent a fair share of my free time in downtown LA. there aren’t many vegan-friendly places in DTLA, let alone places you can go to late night on the weekends after a night of drinking. mac and cheeza became my go to because it’s affordable and open until 2am on fridays and saturdays. scooore!
back when mac and cheeza opened last february, i tagged along with qg to the soft opening. while i liked it back then, i thought the “cheese” tasted more like an alfredo sauce than a cheese sauce. WELL the cheese sauce has definitely improved since then and i found my winning combo of fixins – soy cheese, jalapeno and mushroom with the walnut topping. it’s tha fuckin’ BOMB.

November 22nd, 2010doomie's, LA restaurants
the pre-opening doomie’s home cookin’ all you can eat brunch went down on saturday, and while the lines were long and the place was packed, the food definitely didn’t disappoint. in fact, it was one of the best meals i’ve had in quite awhile and after this weekend i’m even more excited (if that’s possible) about doomie’s opening next month.

the brunch was scheduled to start at 10am, but the kitchen was running a bit behind. one thing about doomie’s is, they can be unpredictable. at their worst, they might be running late or running out of food early…but one thing’s for sure, the quality of the food never suffers. EVER. on saturday at 10:15, doomie’s still hadn’t started serving, but there was already a huge crowd ready to eat. seriously, vegans were excited about this place, and with good reason…

November 19th, 2010baja fresh, LA restaurants
UPDATE 11/22: people are pretty divided on this churro issue. i am gonna let y’all do your own research on this one!
UPDATE 11/22: after some sleuthing, it would appear as though churros at baja fresh are NOT vegan. look for the **** at the very bottom of the post for more info.
UPDATE 11/19: the churros at baja fresh are VEGAN as well! 🙂i don’t usually jump at the chance to eat out at chain fast food restaurants, but it’s always nice to know when they have vegan options.

recently we were checking out a movie at the arclight, and had to find somewhere to grab a super quick lunch before the show. we haven’t been to baja fresh in years, so we decided to give their vegan options a whirl. i was pleasantly surprised by how decent it was, by how much food we got for $8, and by their epic all you can eat salsa bar. honestly, anywhere with a bottomless salsa bar is alright in my book.
here’s a quick rundown of what’s vegan at baja fresh…

aka are you trying to fucking kill me?!
SERIOUSLY, the opening of the new doomie’s location is the LA vegan event of the year as far as i’m concerned…and the fact that they are teasing it with an all you can eat brunch is just plain insane.

we got a SNEAK PEEK at the menu and just had to share it with y’all…

November 17th, 2010LA restaurants, tony's darts away
if there is anything on this blog deserving of an enthusiastic “hell yes!”, it would be these brand new vegan sliders from tony’s darts away in burbank.

i met my parents at tony’s for lunch yesterday and was all set to chow down on a vegan beer brat, when i noticed a new menu item on special: “WHEATLOAF” SLIDERS! oh yes. i often find myself sitting in various bars around town next to customers who are drinking beer while wolfing down plates of miniature burgers, and i always think to myself, “damn, i wish someone would make a vegan version of those.” tony’s darts away has officially answered my prayers, and the result is delicious…

November 15th, 2010LA restaurants, native foods
today is a super exciting day, because it marks the grand opening of the new native foods location in culver city! the popular vegan restaurant already has 6 locations scattered around southern california, and we are thrilled that their 7th is going to be right here in los angeles. native foods culver city opens today at 5pm, but we attended a pre-opening party over the weekend and got a sneak peak at their beautiful new space and their delicious menu items.

the new culver city location is absolutely lovely inside. it’s bright and spacious with colorful walls and lots of pretty decorations. you order at the counter, then take a number, choose a table, and wait for your food to be delivered. since the weather was nice, we grabbed a spot at a long communal table outside on the patio.

November 11th, 2010LA restaurants, mendocino farms
hey everyone, just a quick post to let you know that mendocino farms is testing a new vegan sandwich tomorrow…a mushroom seitan sloppy joe…and you should go show it some support. if it does well, they may extend its run or even add it to the regular menu! i haven’t had a chance to try it yet, but it was available today at all mendocino locations and is going to be around tomorrow as well…hopefully longer. i am already a huge fan of mendocino farms’ vegan sandwiches, so i’d love for them to add another one to the list.

Vegan Mushroom Sloppy Joe! Mushroom Braised Seitan (“Wheat Meat”) Sloppy Joe with Portobello Mushroom Confit, Almond Romesco, and Baby Spinach on Toasted Ciabatta. $9.25
a reader sent me this mendocino farms facebook update today about mendo’s new vegan mushroom seitan sloppy joe and i called the restaurant immediately. the dude on the phone was super helpful and told me this was just a result of chef judy getting “creative in the kitchen” and that they wanted to test the sandwich for a couple days on customers and see how it does. he told me it would definitely be around tomorrow (friday), and if response is good, possibly longer. LET’S MAKE SURE THE RESPONSE IS GOOD. i need more mushroom-flavored seitan and portobello confit sandwiches in my life! seriously, mendocino makes the kind of fresh fancy food that vegans should be eating. it’s all made from crazy top-notch ingredients and is super fresh…as they say on their website “we like to try to reconstruct “Fine Dining” entrees to the sandwich level and take classic regional sandwiches and give them a modern interpretation.” if you have ever tasted a mendocino farms sandwich, you’ll know that’s true.
so please, vegans, get to mendocino farms on friday! they’ve got 2 locations downtown and one in marina del rey. let’s flood them for orders with vegan sandwiches. and if mushroomy seitany sloppy joes aren’t your thing, they also have a vegan dosa wrap and a vegan soyrizo wrap. (just be sure to specify that you want a tortilla with no honey!) basically, all vegans should go and taste the amazing-ness that is mendocino farms!
PS:mendocino, if you are reading this…PLEASE specify in your email newsletter which daily dishes are vegan! i noticed you stopped doing that about a month ago. >:(

November 9th, 2010LA restaurants, stores, whole foods
man, i really love the prepared foods section at whole foods. they are always coming up with new delicious restaurant-quality items that are inexpensive and easy to grab on the go. for somebody like me who doesn’t love to cook, the prepared food section is a godsend. last year they provided our thanksgiving dinner, and over the summer they supplied everything needed for a vegan bbq.

i’m happy to announce that as of today, whole foods locations around los angeles are unveiling their holiday display case, and it’s absolutely packed with all kinds of tasty seasonal foods.

holy shit, guys! doomie’s home cookin’ is back and re-opening in los angeles!

back in 2008/9, doomie’s was one of our favorite restaurants. i am talking about an epic and guilty vegetarian (almost entirely vegan) paradise with loads of deep fried southern-style goodness. they went on hiatus and started looking for a new location about a year ago, and we are happy to announce that they have found it!
doomie’s staged the big reveal of their new location for this weekend’s vegan beer fest…but in case you missed it, here are the details!they are re-opening officially next month at fountain and vine. 1253 n. vine to be exact! it’s going down december 11th, so be there.
to get us crazy stoked about the new location (as if we aren’t already) doomie’s is hosting a special all you can eat brunch on 11/20! it’s happening from 10am until 2pm, and will be $10 for all you can eat or $8 for to go boxes. they are also having a $15 per meal vegan thanksgiving special which includes “turkey, gravy, stuffin, mashed taters, green bean casserole, yams, dessert, etc, you get the idea right?” order it now, and pick it up on november 24th and 25th.

we fucking love doomie’s, and you should too. we will keep you posted with more updates as we have them.
