November 12th, 2010quarrygirlLA restaurants, vegan events

with thanksgiving less than 2 weeks away, it’s time to start planning your cruelty-free celebration. i know this time of year can be pretty depressing for vegans, but it doesn’t have to be! here in los angeles there are several restaurants offering meat-free holiday feasts, and i encourage you to try as many as you possibly can! i’ve put together this quick list for your reference, but if i am missing anything, please let me know! i will keep updating this post as we get closer to tofurky day, so check back often!

    LIST AFTER THE JUMP —->

madeleine bistro (thanksgiving day feast and food to-go)

although they haven’t posted the menu yet for this year, madeleine bistro has assured me that they will be holding a thanksgiving day brunch on november 25th from 10am – 3pm. in addition to the best vegan food in town, they are going to have living turkeys on hand from animal acres. i honestly can’t think of any better way to spend my thanksgiving meal than with great food and a healthy, happy turkey. it fills up pretty quick, so call and book ASAP.

we attended madeleine bistro’s thanksgiving day brunch last year, and it was one of the most memorable meals of my life. i highly recommend it. i am hoping they have the thanksgiving day sandwich again this year: herbed seitan, cranberry mayo, caramelized onions and gravy. it was so good!

thanksgiving sandwich: herbed seitan, cranberry mayo, caramelized onions, gravy. $15

madeleine bistro will also be offering to-go boxes for those who don’t want to eat in. friending them on facebook is the best way to stay updated.

**this just in 11/16/10: madeleine bistro is doing a special thanksgiving version of the bistro box next week! for those of you who don’t know, the bistro box is AMAZING. you gotta get your orders in by tomorrow if you want it. check out the menu, it looks fantastic!

native foods (thanksgiving day feast and food to-go)

native foods has all kinds of exciting stuff going on this year, including a thanksgiving day dinner buffet at 3 of their locations. it’s only $24.95 per person (a steal, if you ask me!), but you need to make reservations. just look at that menu:

for us here in los angeles, this will be a great opportunity to check out native foods’ new culver city location! they’ll start taking reservations for culver city when they open on monday november 15th, so book it!

if you feel like feasting at home, native foods is offering their famous native wellington again this year…a puff pastry filled with homemade seitan, kale, portobello mushrooms, yams, stuffing, and caramelized onions. it’s only $39.95 and feeds 8 people! i have had a wellington before, and i promise you it’s one of the best meals around. i highly suggest getting a few of these (even if you don’t have a lot of people to feed) and freezing them! wellingtons aren’t available all year, so act now! people who order a welly this year also receive a dvd full of recipes.

native foods is also offering dessert to-go: pumpkin pies, pumpkin cheesecakes, chocolate love pies, and cheesecakes for $19.95! each dessert feeds 6 – 8 people.

doomie’s NEVER disappoints, and i’m willing to bet they will throw some surprises into the thanksgiving box as well. i am definitely gonna order one of these! call doomie’s at (714) 883 – 7657 or hit them up on facebook.

    vegin’ out (thanksgiving home delivery)

YES! so stoked that one of our favorite vegan home delivery services, vegin’ out, is offering a thanksgiving feast for two! it’s $80 for 2 people and comes with a huge amount of food including a seitan roast with gravy, roasted garlic mashed potatoes, fresh cranberry sauce, green beans with caramelized onions, quinoa stuffing, and oatmeal cranberry cookies. i am drooling just thinking about it! vegin’ out is so good, and they deliver food to your door. who can argue with that. check it out!

vinh loi tofu (thanksgiving turkey take out)

i’m pretty sure vinh loi tofu is offering their realistic take-out vegan turkeys again this year! i got one of these last year to celebrate with my omnivore parents (yes, i had like 3 thanksgiving meals last year) and they loved it!

the turkey may look a little bit crazy to vegans, but i promise you it tastes SO GOOD. it comes from vinh loi ready to bake, and you can fill it up with your own stuffing.

contact vinh loi tofu for ordering info: (818) 996-9779

    shojin (thanksgiving day feast)

i have a feeling this is going to be a popular one, so book a table asap! (213) 617-0305

one wold vegetarian (thanksgiving day feast and to-go orders)

one world vegetarian is back again this year with their enormous vegan turkey for $49.95! they are also open on thanksgiving day, and have vegan turkey slices available throughout the month.

happy veggie (thanksgiving meals all week, including a thanksgiving day feast)

direct from a quarrygirl commenter: For those in the South Bay, Happy Veggie in Redondo Beach is offering their vegan Thanksgiving feast all week long, including on Thanksgiving day. I went and tried it last night. Very good food and ridiculously inexpensive compared to what we’ve seen elsewhere. Two of were able to eat the platter – pumkin soup for 2, vegan turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, one yam, cranberry sauce, veggies, nice gravy and 2 desserts or pumkin pie – for $22.95. SERIOUSLY! Ok, we aren’t huge eaters, but it way more food than most people could eat alone. And even if you got 2, it’s still less expensive that what I’ve seen elsewhere.

    vegi wokery (thanksgiving day feast)

don’t feel left out, orange county! vegi wokery is open on thanksgiving day from 11am – 7pm and will be serving a feat for just $15.95 per person. dinner will include harvest soup, vegetarian turkey with gravy, string beans, stuffing, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, dessert, and more. advance reservations are required, call (562) 809-3928 to book.

more good news for orange county folks! wheel of life in irvine is opening for thanksgiving. get your feast on from 11am – 3pm and 4pm -9pm on november 25th. they will also offer take out, if you don’t feel like eating in. here is a look at the menu.

the 17th annual thanksgiving to-go is back at real food daily for $39.95 per person. check out their menu here:

follow your heart (pre-thanksgiving feast and take-out)

****updated 11/17: i just got the follow your heart menu for thanksgiving, and it’s epic! this year they are going ALL VEGAN for the holiday, and meals will be available for take-out, as well as in the restaurant a couple days prior to the holiday. the menu is insane: roasted rosemary vegan turkey, creamy country gravy, whole wheat stuffing, glazed yams, creamy mashed potatoes, green beans, orange cranberry relish, pumpkin pie, and cranberry bread! pre-orders are being taken now. so just call them at (818) 348-3240. if you want to eat in the restaurant thanksgiving style, they are serving the holiday feast on tuesday november 23rd from 4pm-9pm and wednesday november 24th from noon-10pm. seeya there!

    cinnamon vegetarian (thanksgiving take-out)

cinnamon vegetarian in highland park offers everything you need to have a traditional vegan holiday feast at home. they’ve got faux turkey roasts, savory gravy, cinnamon raisin stuffing, cranberry sauce, sesame green beans, and mashed potatoes. orders are $20 for a single dinner, or $65 for a meal that serves 4. they’ve got pies as well: pumpkin, green tea, key lime, berry, and chocolate. again, be sure to specify that you want your holiday meal to be vegan…because i think they have both vegetarian and vegan options.

    m cafe (thanksgiving take-out)

m cafe has made me SO HAPPY this year, because they’ve dropped the fish option off their holiday take-out menu. this year it’s all vegan, and it all sounds fantastic! just have a look at the menu:

i am especially excited to see that babycakes is making specialty desserts. get your orders in by november 23rd at noon if you want to enjoy this m cafe feast for thanksgiving.

    chili addiction (thanksgiving-themed menu items)

one of our favorite omnivorous restaurants in town is offering up some very vegan-friendly thanksgiving specials this month! be sure to check out their “fall festival” chili made from match turkey, fresh butternut squash, kidney beans, and corn. they also have a seasonal fall sorbet made with lemon and cranberry zest. on top of that, they have ANOTHER new vegan sorbet made with banana and vegan marshmallows. i am so there.

susan feniger’s street (thanksgiving take out)

street may serve meat, but their take out thanksgiving menu is very vegan-friendly. they have a jackfruit tandoori option as a main dish for $18 per person, and several of their sides can be veganized including pumpkin poblano tamales, mashed potatoes, and kabocha squash with miso tofu to name a few. in fact, their menu is so vegan-friendly that they put stars ** next to the items that CANNOT be made vegan. check out the menu here.

whole foods (thanksgiving to-go in the prepared foods section)

the whole foods display case is rocking for the holiday. they provided my actual thanksgiving dinner last year, and this year they are back with even more delicious offerings. stock up on field roast, gardein, and vegan stuffing all november!

    hugo’s (thanksgiving themed menu)

get into the thanksgiving spirit all month with hugo’s happy holiday feast. they’ve made it all vegan this year and it comes with a slice of savory lentil loaf, braised leafy greens, herb broth-sautéed succotash (sweet corn, zucchini, green beans, tomato, turmeric rice, almonds, currents, garlic and herbs) and mashed potatoes for $14. it’s served with oil-free mushroom gravy and cranberry-apple chutney.

    spork foods (thanksgiving cooking class)

wanna cook your own thanksgiving feast? no problem! sign up for a spork foods cooking class this weekend or next weekend and learn all you need to know about making a killer holiday meal. on november 13th and 14th you can learn how to make a southern thanksgiving feast, all gluten-free! the menu includes bourbon-glazed tempeh with carrots, cranberry cornbread with whipped lemon butter, maple candied yams with marshmallow topping, and mini spiced pumpkin bundt cakes with chocolate ganache! on november 20th and 21st they will teach you how to make a traditional thanksgiving feast…lentil loaf with truffle scented mushroom thyme gravy, sourdough stuffing with fennel and apples, walnut and sage potatoes au gratin, and pumpkin mousse with a pecan praline topping. take a spork foods class and learn how to make food that will totally win over those staunch omnivore relatives.

that’s all i’ve got for now! if i am missing any los angeles thanksgiving happenings, please leave a comment. as i said earlier, i will be updating this post regularly, so be sure to check back!

Lovely post QG, thanks so much for the detailed information!! Looks like there are a lot of terrific options for the holiday.

  • Man, I wish someone would put together a guide this comprehensive for NYC Thanksgiving!!

  • Thank you for putting all this together and for being all-around fucking awesome! You are a treasure to all of us vegans in Los Angeles and elsewhere.

  • QuarryGirl, you rock. How can you be so awesome? This must have taken ages to do. THANKS from the bottom of my heart.

Only problem now is there are too many choices!

  • Thanks a million QG! Now the only problem is – where do I order from??

  • I just love how your site is my one stop shop for vegan food! My friend just placed an order for the vinh loi tofu “turkey” for our meal. So excited!!!!!

  • This stuff looks awesome! Too bad I will be in Berlin over Thanksgiving.

“You are a treasure to all of us vegans in Los Angeles and elsewhere.”

    Seriously!!!! Thanks again 😀

  • the One World turkey is delicious as i have had it for the past 3 years. and because it is so big, lots of leftover “turkey” sandwiches

  • Thank you so much QG!!! One of my favourite things about Thanksgiving are the leftovers. Cold Tofurkey sandwiches with lettuce and lashings of veganaise are pure heaven.

  • Chili Addiction said they’d have cornbread (muffins??) you can pick up before Tday.
Cinnamon Veg did us right last year. It was fantastic! So was the Wellington from Native Foods.
I noticed Trader Joe’s has their tofurkey out for $10.
I’m interested in trying the vinh loi tofu this year. It looks kind of gross in that shape but I’m feeding carnivores. Maybe I can fool them.

  • Thanks for the fabulous list. I was just talking today with someone who is trying to have a veg Thanksgiving for the first time and needs just this list! Many thanks.

  • Thank you so much for this! I know Susan Feniger’s Street is doing a thanksgiving take-away menu. They have a vegan option (jackfruit roasted in the tandoori oven) and many of the side dishes can be made vegan.

I’ll likely hit up Madeleine Bistro for brunch with my husband and my BFF (it’s her birthday that day) and then cook a Native Foods Wellington that night with a few sides!

  • Is the corn bread at Chili Addiction vegan??

  • just order my doomie’s thanksgiving take out!! thanks for the list!

  • Shojin’s Thanksgiving menu is now up! Time to up-DATE again!

    you are amazing!!!

  • Where is the Doomies event going to be held? Not at their new location, right?

  • Wow, everything looks delicious !!
    thank you so much !!

  • You have just saved the day–you are SERIOUSLY AWESOME!!!

  • For those in the South Bay, Happie Veggie in Redondo Beach is offering their vegan Thanksgiving feast all week long, including on Thanksgiving day. I went and tried it last night. Happy Thanksgiving.

  • This is an awesome list – but … I’m going to be stuck in Palmdale on Wednesday and Thursday nights. Driving 50-70 miles *into* LA for a meal seems inadvisable (that’s like 3 hours of driving!)… any tips for places closer to Palmdale?

  • Giiiiirlll! You rock! My picky vegan/veggie family hasn’t been able to make up their mind this whole time, leaving us to make a last min decision about what we’re gonna eat tomorrow. Thanks sooo much for compiling this list. =) I *heart* you.

  • You go QG! No excuse to not go Veg in L.A. Thank you. 🙂

  • i didnt see green earth (pasadena) on this list – did i miss it in the article? they are also doing a vegan thanksgiving turkey and some other options i think.

  • Govinda’s is not on your list of vegetarian options for Thanksgiving. They have an unbelievable Vegetarian spread, one all Vegan and one with dairy. The price is only $12.99 per person for all you can eat. They have over 10 different and delicious preparations served buffet style. All home made preparations. Great ambience and warmth all day, noon to 8pm. I have been going for 20 years, as have many others. Reservations not required, they will try to accomodate anyone. The Gift shop upstairs is also open on Thanksgiving and has an annual sale that kicks off today. Not to be missed! Phone 310 836 1289
