hey guys! as you probably know, we’re following the band silver snakes around on tour, via vegan food text updates from band member alex. he’s taken us around—from other parts of california, to nevada, to idaho, and now they’re in seattle (still) for more tastiness. today was epic, just see alex’s updates below. oh, and don’t forget to check out silver snakes when they’re in a city near you. go to their show and talk them into eating with you…it may end up on this blog!
Mighty-o donuts. Seattle, WA. Naked cake and pumpkin spice donuts and a hot cocoa. Naked cake donuts are my favorite! I wish I could find them back in LA.

*for an explanation on the secret menu, scroll to the bottom of the post.
oh god doomie’s, are you trying to kill me? i stopped in the other day and inquired about their current “secret menu*” (something ALWAYS worth doing when dining there), and they pointed me towards a brand new vegan big mac. i can say without hesitation that this was the most gigantic, delicious, ridiculous burger i’ve ever eaten. nothing else comes close. if you’re feeling like having a healthy, light-eating day, stay away from this thing. if you want the a vegan burger that you’ll remember for years to come, proceed.
this thing was what a real big mac should look like (massive, not smashed the way fast food always is), except it was 100% vegan. two huge beefy patties, tons of melty vegan cheese (look at it in the bottom left of the picture!), creamy special sauce, lettuce, onion, (i got mine w/o pickles), double bread, and a sesame seed bun. we all know how much i love doomie’s, but they’ve really outdone themselves this time. get over there and beg them to let you try it.
but wait, there’s more…

October 17th, 2011products
happy monday, everyone! in honor of the start of the work week, i’m bringing you a post about my favorite quick in the office lunch: dr. mcdougall noodles.
i work in a part of town without a ton of vegan options, and during the week when i’m busy, i’m super thankful for the good doctor’s food line. mcdougall has been making low fat vegan soup cups for years, but recently he came out with a new line called “asian entrees,” which includes several noodle dishes such as pad thai, roasted peanut, spicy kung pao and teriyaki. they all taste delicious, they’re easy to prepare, and each cup is only around 200 calories! win/win/win.
pictured at the top of the post is the pad thai, along with some added vegetables and loads of sriracha. so good! when i’m at work, i usually eat the noodles on their own straight out the cup, and they’re just as tasty. you can find these noodle cups at places like ralphs or whole foods, and they go for a few bucks per serving.
and if you like dr. mcdougall on facebook, you can enter to win a month’s supply of noodles and an ipad! yes!

heads up, folks! it’s oktoberfest time, and today the verdugo bar is hosting a vegan-friendly celebration with loads of german beer and food by the international sausage party. admission is ten bucks per person—it includes a commemorative stein, and the opportunity to watch a bunch of drunk people chillin’ in lederhosen. i checked with the food vendor, and they will definitely have some vegan sausages on hand, along with beer onion rings as a topping. WANT.
we got a taste of international sausage party a few weeks ago at the hot knives salad daze cookbook launch, and it was awesome…

October 14th, 2011LA restaurants, nacho truck
today’s good news comes via my friend basia, who stumbled upon the nacho truck in the valley. while their online menu isn’t updated to list vegan options, they’ve got ’em—with daiya cheese and everything!
she writes: “This is random, but I stopped by Cinema Secrets in Burbank yesterday, and there was a Nacho Food Truck there that served veggie/vegan nachos, which were REALLY yummy. They make everything themselves, and the chips are incredible. 1 plate of nachos is more than enough for one person, I was sooo filled. The bowl might look small, but there’s lots in it.”
here’s a snap of the truck menu…

October 13th, 2011bands, more restaurants (not LA), sacramento, vegan events
finding vegan food can be hard sometimes, but imagine being a vegan musician on tour. shuffling around from city to city, being away from home, and dealing with the pressures of performing—all while trying to find 3 animal-free meals per day in uncharted territory. sounds challenging, eh? well that’s what alex estrada is up to right now, as his band silver snakes embarks on a 10 day tour from california to nevada, to washington and oregon and back again. for educational purposes, alex has agreed to document his vegan tour experience via text to me, and i’m gonna post it all here on the blog. the tour culminates here in LA with a CD release party on october 23rd, so i expect to see you all there after reading what’s gone into the silver snakes’ stomachs for ten days straight. if you aren’t familiar with silver snakes yet, check out their site, listen to them on spotify, and read up on them at peta2.
their tour kicked off today in sacramento, and the band stopped off at a chipotle in lebec, CA for lunch, followed by some sugar plum vegan in sacramento for dinner. here are the photos, along with alex’s direct words via SMS.
California classic. Lebec, CA – chipotle veggie bowl. Extra beans, all the salsas, corn tortilla on the side. I have no idea where we are… I think we are by bakersfield.
I found a place in Sacramento I want to try. I hope we make it in time! Dude I heard this place has a jackfruit/walnut tuna melt and animal style fries.. pray4me ;)…

breaking news! tony’s darts away, LA’s vegan-friendly craft beer bar, launched a new menu today of signature sausages. the old deal was, customers would pick a sausage with up to 4 toppings and order at the counter. that’s still an option, but now TDA has introduced 6 custom combinations to help you out and make ordering easier. the new menu isn’t posted on their site yet, but we’ve got a snap of it. you’re welcome. check it out…
