August 8th, 2011quarrygirlmore restaurants (not LA), san francisco

san francisco seems to be the city of awesome sandwiches. they’ve got fried tofu banh mis at dinosaurs, fake meaty masterpieces at ike’s place, and now i’ve fallen in love with the wheat meat cheesesteaks at jay’s.

mushroom style seitan cheesesteak with vegan mayo, mustard, lettuce and tomato. $8.45

although jay’s cheesesteak isn’t a vegetarian restaurant by any means, they do their vegan sandwiches right with over 10 seitan styles to choose from and a vegenaise option so we don’t have to skip the mayo altogether.

jay’s has two locations in san francisco, and we hit up their mission storefront at around noon on a weekday. we split a mushroom style seitan sandwich, and it was a feast for 2 people at under 9 bucks. an over-sized crusty roll slathered with vegenaise and piled high with paper-thin sheets of seitan, as though they had been run through a meat slicer. probably the best seitan sandwich i’ve eaten in my life.

we were tempted to split a basket of fries as well, until we found out they were fried along with the meat products. dammit jay’s! oh well, the sandwich got us plenty full.

i can’t wait to go back to san francisco just so i can get another one of these babies. i think i’ll go with seitan garlic next time.

    Amazing

  • i love jay’s seiten cheesesteak; was pretty much addicted to it when i lived in SF and it’s often my first stop when i go back.

best thing is to hit up the mission location and get a fresh juice next door at Sidewalk Juice while you’re waiting for jay to cook up your sandwich.

  • I lived on Jay’s for 6 years. Absolutely the bomb.

  • Whoaaaaa…that’s amazing. I mean, we have some good vegan sammiches in LA but something like this would be very welcome.

Does anyone know of a place that makes a good vegan version of Chicago style Itallian Beef?

  • Greg: You might want to check out Native Foods this weekend. They sent out an email earlier today about a special Chicago dip au jus offered this weekend only.

  • only go here if you don’t mind the vegan steak being cooked on the same grill with the real steak. i called once to ask if they separate the two and the guy acted offended by the question.

  • So in love with this place… can’t ever make it to Herbivore anymore, since catching a glance of the vegetarian option a few years ago. I eat 2-4 each time I’m in the Bay (including a cold one for the loooooong drive down the 5). Thanks for giving it a shout out, so more people know about it. I don’t ever want them to stop the seitan options!

Extra vegenaise+sweet peppers is a killa!!!
