hey readers! time for a field report from sacramento by geanna of green vegan living. she shares some gluten-free goodness from sugar plum bakery, and tells us about a vegan specialty shop called never felt better. we had the pleasure of trying sugar plum’s treats when they were based in los angeles and LOVED THEM, so i can imagine this stuff is just as good, if not better. enjoy!

Sugar Plum Vegan Bakery has only been open a year, but they are a great asset to the city of Sacramento. Not only do they offer delicious vegan baked goods, they also have quite a selection of gluten-free, sugar-free and soy-free options AS WELL AS regular savory menu items (like taco Tuesdays and all-you-can-eat Sunday morning brunches).

Morning Glory Banana/Chocolate Chip muffin. $3

I was especially interested in the gluten-free options. I got to the bakery at 11 a.m., which was apparently too early to eat lunch (the daily menu hadn’t even been made yet), so I was “forced” to order a sweet item. I decided upon the Morning Glory Banana/Chocolate Chip muffin. It was massive and delicious! It was sweet, moist, and waaay too filling for me to finish. I topped it off with a mug of loose-leaf apricot black tea.

    Apricot Black Tea

Besides the muffin, they had a carrot cake with frosting, a chocolate cupcake, something called The Entertainer (it looked like a Hostess Cake), and a different Morning Glory muffin with different fruit in it. The non-gluten-free options were endless. To be honest, I didn’t really take a good look at them, but I did notice a muffin that had a strawberry on top. If it had been gluten-free, I would have snapped that baby up in a second.

My muffin was $3 and I thought that seemed pretty reasonable for a specialty baked item. The bakery had a lot of seating available, and I chose to sit outside, where there were four tables to choose from.

The bakery is in the downstairs of a building that also houses a small vegan shop, called Never Felt Better. They have t-shirts (that are currently on sale), books, a few refrigerated food items, and vegan belts. I found and purchased a really cute postcard. I quickly began chatting it up with the owners, Shawn and Jen, who are the nicest folks ever. If you go in, be sure and take a moment to talk with them!

Cool, thanks for the review. Will try and stop in if I’m ever in Sacramento.

You will never be in Sacramento, though.

  • Thank you for the kinds words!!

  • Thanks for highlighting the one of the VERY few vegan restaurants in Sacramento. Just as an update, the Plum is now set up for debit/credit cards. The Never Felt Better Vegan store is also a highlight and yes, the owners are so very friendly and helpful. Even my vegan friends have enjoyed doing a little shopping when I have taken them there.
