zpizza + clara’s cakes = food coma
17January 6th, 2011LA restaurants, vegan bakers, vegan cheese, zpizzain celebration of the upcoming vegan pizza day (which you should all be spreading the word and blogging about), i’m gonna make an effort to post more about pizza on the blog throughout january…which shouldn’t be hard, because we eat a lot of it!
there are TONS of vegan-friendly pizza joints in los angeles, and we think zpizza is one of the best. we even added their amazing tuscan pizza to our vegan bucket list, it’s that damn good. another awesome thing about zpizza is, they’re a national chain and every location offers vegan pizza! so even if you aren’t in LA, you may very well have a zpizza near you.
recently we had a little zpizza shindig with us and the team from clara’s cakes, which meant not only was tasty pizza involved, but also mouthwatering desserts…
the four of us almost completely devoured two entire pizzas, starting with the berkeley vegan (pictured above). i love that zpizza has this on their menu; a pie stacked with vegetables, fake meat, and daiya cheese…that comes vegan by default with no modifications. i’ve been dying to try it ever since z officially switched to using gardein for their meat substitute, and it did not disappoint. these crumbles were amazing, way better than the old ones they used to use. the pie came covered in tons of vegetables including zucchini, tomatoes, mushrooms, and red onions. (we left off the bell peppers because i absolutely HATE them!) honestly, it was so delicious. i think the berkeley vegan may now rival the tuscan as my favorite zpizza creation.
we also got the provence (made vegan), which comes with both organic tomato sauce AND homemade roasted garlic sauce, artichoke hearts, capers, tomatoes, basil, and daiya cheese. i love the 2 sauce combo…like a normal pizza but with an added kick of garlic and oil. clara had the genius idea of adding extra avocado, so we ordered that on half of it, and it turned out to be excellent. avocado on pizza?! i never would have thought…but it gave each slice a rich and cool creaminess that was simply divine.
overall the pizza was a huge crowd-pleaser. we each enjoyed several slices and i was completely stuffed by the end of the evening. so stuffed, in fact, i had to save dessert for the following morning!
homemade vegan cupcakes by clara’s cakes?! yes, please! these things were amazing as always…really, if you haven’t tried the goodies from clara’s yet, you are missing out. order some! even the simple flavors like chocolate and vanilla are insane, not to mention the fancy varieties like tiramisu!
vegan friends, vegan pizza, and vegan cupcakes. it really doesn’t get much better than that.
check out zpizza’s website for their menu and all of their locations. i think they’d be a great place to order from on vegan pizza day (or any day!).

It does look good!
I am so excited that Pizza Fusion in Hollywood now has a pizza crust that is both vegan AND gluten-free! I had always very much liked their Very Vegan Pizza, but we had to stop calling them for delivery when I began avoiding gluten some months ago because the gluten-free crust USED to contain eggs, according to what I had read online. But that has now changed, according to a Pizza Fusion (Hollywood location) menu that we received in the mail several days ago, AS WELL AS verification yesterday over the phone from an employee of the restaurant! HALLELUJAH! We ordered again, finally, from them last night, and the new gluten-free, vegan pizza crust is delicious! Thank you, Pizza Fusion, Hollwood location, for this excellent improvement!

I had the Berkeley pizza at Zpizza in Columbus, OH of all places (we live in L.A.). We had to drive way out of our way to get there but it was so worth it.

The Berkeley with the new Gardein crumbles is my fav! Ever since I first tried it, I can’t bring myself to order anything else :p

Thanks for posting pics of vegan pizza and Clara’s cupcakes while I’m doing raw all week. Thanks.:)

watch out with these soy meats. A few weeks ago some friends brought some zpizza over to my house and it turned out the lovely people at zpizza made a big booboo and put real chicken on top of what we thought was a vegan pizza – yikes!

I really must have one of those frosted vegan cupcakes. It is definite. Inevitable. Highly necessary. And Extremely important.
Thank-you very much. -

Zpizza is pretty damn good, and they have tons of totally wacky ingredient options. Good crust, too; it’s got that fried taste (like Pizza Hut crust) if you’re into that.

i don’t understand how california has yet to catch onto adding broccoli and spinach to pizza. it’s fucking amazing and very common in atlanta!!

So it’s heresay, but my friend got a “vegan” pizza that ended up having real cheese and was followed by the incident @Ricki mentioned: REAL CHICKEN on a VEGAN pizza, to which ZPizza did NOTHING to apologize for. No way I trust these guys, sorry.

I will never forget the last time we called Kung Pao Bistro for delivery and I thought the faux chicken I had requested was animal meat chicken (this was back before I began avoiding gluten). My partner tasted it and agreed with me. We’ve never called them for delivery since.

I have had three really bad experiences at Zpizza in the past few months. The first time they gave me a pizza with real cheese, denied it was real cheese. My friend hassled the workers about it and they laughed and admitted it was real cheese. The second incident they thought they could fool us and mixed together real cheese and daiya cheese. When I confronted the owner of the West Hollywood zpizza where both incidents occurred, they laughed it off as an honest mistake saying mistakes happen and some of their employees just don’t understand what vegan is, particularly the cook. Their lack of care shows they really don’t respect vegans. The third time I went to Burbank and they mixed real chicken with the burger crumbles. Upon complaining again, the owner, manager and even corporate could care less! I just want to warn people that they are mixing together real meat, faux meats, real cheese and fake cheese and to be aware. This has happened to my other friends too, so I know it’s not just me.

Glad to read your post, Jessica. We’ve never been to Zpizza, and certainly wouldn’t even consider ever going there now.

I think from now on, if i’m in the mood for pizza its gonna be Cruzer or Follow your Heart. I was certainly not happy with zpizza and mistakenly eating some poor dead chicken. Oh and let me tell you guys that after like 25 years of veganism and you eat some real dead chicken your stomach is really really not good with it – ohhh man I recall having a very unpleasant experience with my digestion after eating that hormone injected chemically altered tortured animal
