kimberly and dan who are currently based in china couldn’t make it to the huge new year’s eve shindig at tony’s darts away, so they decided to create their own. they started out with homemade usr (ultra super rad) sauce using vegenaise, chinese chili, ground red pepper, frank’s xtra hot, and tofutti better than cream cheese. they also made homemade potato chips fried in a wok…
homemade chips and USR hot sauce
and used some hong kong vegan sausages to make tony’s-style dogs…
Smalls: Vegenaise and dijon mustard (Dan used USR hot sauce instead of Vegenaise). Bigs: Grilled peppers & onions and shredded Follow Your Heard cheddar.
looks awesome to me! you can read more about it on kimberly’s blog.
casey sends us these pics from the last super at fatty’s and writes, “it was the best meal that we’ve had there! It felt like the staff really wanted to end it on a high note.” i’m so glad somebody was there to document the last night at one of LA’s top vegetarian restaurants! sad we couldn’t make it, but the food looks AMAZING…
potato tacos: organic potato skins fried crisp and filled with corn, black beans, green chili red bell peppers, onions, chipotle cheddar and tomatillo salsa. $9
moussaca: a mildly spicy gratin of chickpeas, red lentils, mushrooms and onions between layers of roasted eggplant, garlic mashed potatoes and a tomato sauce Provençal; topped with an artisan crust. $15

SAD NEWS
miki always does a traditional southern meal on new year’s day for good luck!
miki's southern new year's day feast
this year it was “Hoppin’ John (black eyed peas, Tofurkey sausage, rice, peppers and plenty of hot sauce), BBQ Chicken, Sauteed Garlicy Collard Greens, Sweet Potato Corn Bread Muffins, and Sweet Tea!”
deborah checked out madeleine bistro on new year’s eve, and described her meal as heavenly. here is what she ordered:
french onion and broccoli puree soup
red beet tartare
meatloaf
lemon-rosemary seitan
holiday plate with vegan turkey
bananas foster
cheesecake
damn! madeleine bistro, a southern feast, last super at fatty’s, tony’s darts away in china, and mozzarella teese sticks?! sounds like 2011 is off to an awesome start.

[…] In true style with my disdain for being born on the most overrated day of the year, I opted to celebrate in a more low-maintenance way (and yes, those “mozzarella” sticks tasted even better than they look in the photo-yes […]
