the club club: hugo’s restaurant
12February 17th, 2010hugo's restaurant, LA restaurantswe are on a mission to find the best vegan club sandwich in los angeles, and the offering at hugo’s restaurant is nothing to scoff at.
like most of the items on their menu, their standard club option is vegan-friendly as long as you order it with grilled tofu and vegetarian bacon (yeah, the vegetarian bacon is vegan as well….i checked with the staff!).
hugo’s vegan club comes on a wheat ciabatta roll, with a healthy portion of organic tofu, fakin’ bacon, guacamole, lettuce, tomatoes, and vegenaise. it’s not a double decker sandwich, like many of the other clubs we’ve reviewed…but what it lacks in layers, it makes up for in taste and guacamole. the tofu is firm and chewy, the bread is soft, and the guac is ridiculously creamy.
at $12.85, hugo’s club is on the more expensive end of the spectrum, but it comes with a side of greens or fries PLUS the guacamole is no extra charge. i really can’t complain. in this instance i opted for the healthy salad which was fresh and tasty….but if you are in a careless mood, i highly suggest you go for the newly vegan french fries!
at this point, i am thinking the winner of the club club would still be m cafe—but hugo’s offers a damn worthy sandwich that you should try.
so which other vegan clubs in los angeles am i missing?

I still haven’t made it over to Hugo’s yet. I must go try their vegan items, I’m near their Studio City location all the time for work.

Holy crap! That is expensive for a sandwich. Glad it was tasty though. Can’t wait to see which club wins.

Gonna have to opt out of this one. Tofu slabs between bread herald my running far, far away.

Nite Moon cafe has a club. I might check it out tonight, since I’ll be there. I know they use tempeh bacon.

I agree with Clubtaculour; the vegan club at Real Food Daily is the best vegan club I’ve ever had.

Are we ever sure-sure the bread is vegan? I get different responses from the WeHo and StuCity Hugo’s. Until they get their stories straight I avoid the bread.
FYH has the best club, not that Madeleine Bistro’s isn’t great, but FYH is the crave-worthiest for me.

I’m with Greg…big slabs of tofu aren’t my thing, either.
I love the M Cafe version. Need to try RFD’s though..

I only like tofu if it’s scrambled w/ lots of green peppers, onion and whatever veggies sound good. And salsa! OR I like the silken kind to make sweet puddings, pies, etc..

real food daily for sure. m cafe comes comes- buttt RFD wins by a hair! And while you’re at RFD, might as well get some potatoes and gravy, too!
