Vegan Field Report: Nice Slice Pizza in Providence, RI
4October 30th, 2011more restaurants (not LA), rhode islandwe love pizza! time for a pizza field report all the way from rhode island by tamar of the curveball. i have eaten a lot of vegan pizza in my time, and this stuff looks insane. check it:
If you’re vegan and enjoy thin-crust pizza, and find yourself in Providence, RI, do yourself a favor and find your way to Nice Slice on Thayer Street.
The photo does not do this pizza justice. First, let me start with the crust. It is a thin whole wheat crust, but not overpoweringly whole grainy tasting. The texture is top-notch. Biting into it, there’s that perfect combination of chewiness and crispiness. My omni boyfriend and I shared a margherita and a BBQ vegan chicken slice and we both agreed – the best vegan pizza we’ve ever tasted…
While the Nice Slice employee could not reveal the brand of vegan cheese they use, he did tell me it was “soy-based” and not Daiya. All I can say is, whatever cheese they use is used well. I wholeheartedly appreciate when vegan cheese is not overzealously used, especially on pizza where there is such a delicate balance of crust, sauce and toppings. This cheese almost melted into the crust, it was so perfectly executed – almost like a cheesy focaccia. It enhanced the flavors of the BBQ sauce and vegan chicken as well as the lovely marinara and fresh basil on the margherita slice.
OK, so we actually devoured one more margherita slice after the first two. Can you blame us? I don’t know when we’ll be back in Providence next!

Big fan. Shout outs to Sean Murphy. Thayer Street has some great veg eats. RIP Spikes.

Are you doubly sure that’s vegan? I’ve never seen vegan cheese visually appear identical when it melts to dairy cheese. No casein?

Sweet! Used to hit up Nice Slice a lot when we lived in CT. As they say, the best thing to do on a weekend in CT, is to leave CT. Actually, this was my first experience with a vegan pizza, five or so years ago…
