weekend vegan lunchin’ at mohawk bend
3October 28th, 2011LA restaurants, mohawk bendstoked! now mohawk bend, the massive beer bar and vegan-friendly restaurant in echo park, is now open at noon on saturdays & sundays for lunch. if you’ve been to mohawk, you probably know that it can get crazy busy at night (think 1-3 hour wait times!), but we checked the bar out last weekend at noonish and it had a much more chilled out and relaxed vibe. plus, a new vegan lunch option: bangers and mash!
lemme preface this by saying, i love vegan bangers and mash. i have eaten it all around london, but i’ve never had a version of it here in LA…
we were actually just stopping in for beers at mohawk last weekend, but when i saw vegan-friendly bangers and mash on the menu, i knew i had to get some. and i’m glad i did, because the meal was incredible. mohawk uses apple sage field roast sausages (from what i can tell), with a delicious mix of mashed potatoes and cabbage, served with a creamy brown gravy, greens, and a pot of mustards. pretty much the perfect pub lunch, and definitely big enough to share.
we also tried out one of mohawk’s salads, the jj kale, which is offered for lunch and dinner. it was interesting because it was a warm salad, and i loved it. tons of high quality kale mixed up with seared garlic and chili—how can you go wrong?
with so much vegan food and beer available in LA, it’s surprising hard to get the two things at the same restaurant. i am so, so happy that mohawk is offering both at lunchtime. we used to hit up the now deceased pure luck pretty much every saturday…and it looks like mohawk will be a welcome replacement.

Want. So want those bangers and mash. Gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme!
Wait. I live in the area. I think I know where I’ll be on Sunday!

They’ve really been screwing the pooch by not being open during the weekend days; glad they’re remedying that.
