vegan naan in los angeles: get it at mrs. winston’s!
10August 15th, 2011LA restaurants, mrs. winston'sas any curry-loving vegan will tell you, naan we can eat is very hard to come by. while many indian dishes are animal-free by default, the traditional flatbread is usually off limits due to its egg and butter content. well vegans in LA need look no further for the naan of their dreams—i found it yesterday at mrs. winston’s green grocery on ocean park, of all places!
we’ve been singing the praises of the small west side deli for years, and as far as i’m concerned its the best place to get a vegan salad in town. it’s a pay by weight kind of deal, and for
$7.95$8.25 per pound you get your fill of vegetables, beans, grains, tofu, mock meat dishes, pastas, breads, and spreads. everything that’s vegan is clearly marked and they are always trying out new items.i was stoked yesterday on a routine trip to the bread cabinet to find vegan naan on display—-plain and spinach, without any transfat either!
i’m happy to report that the bread was absolutely delicious—moist and fluffy like all good naan should be, but without any of the animal products. mrs. winston’s is by no means an indian restaurant, but you should definitely swing by and try out this naan if you have a chance. oh, and fill up on the excellent salad selection while you’re at it.

YES!! Naan paradise! If only I could find an Indian place that made vegan garlic naan (Gangadin, I’m looking at you!)…

Eggs in traditional naan? In my experience it’s yogurt in the dough that makes it not vegan (plus ghee brushed on at the end).

I just googled naan, and this is the first recipe that came up. it calls for both butter and eggs.

^ You might have some luck in Artesia? I go there very often.
There are a couple places on Pioneer Blvd that are very helpful with veganizing Indian dishes. -

It’s a bit far though–I understand if you wouldn’t want to trek all the way down there just for naan.
I take the 605 South and with no traffic it can be a quick drive, but when that freeway fills up it can take over an hour to get there, no bueno. -

The naan in India does not have eggs. Eggs are not eaten among the huge Hindu/Sikh vegetarian population. This must be a Western addition.

It’s almost always dairy in the dough from what I read, not eggs.

The salad bar is $8.25 a pound now. They usually raise it every year. But still…best salad bar in LA!
