Vegan Orange County Field Report: Sensitive Sweets in Fountain Valley
10July 26th, 2011more restaurants (not LA), orange county, vegan bakershey everyone! time for an OC field report from reader nicky tracy. in the following post, she explores a mostly vegan and gluten-free bakery called sensitive sweets in fountain valley. i can’t wait to check this place out!
Vegan dining options in Orange County aren’t exactly few and far between, but when you’re gluten-free and have an insatiable sweet tooth, that can be a whole ‘nother story entirely. Naturally when I got wind that an all gluten-free and vegan-friendly bakery had opened up in northern Orange County, I couldn’t wait to investigate. Sensitive Sweets, located off of Brookhurst and Slater Ave in Fountain Valley in a little strip mall next to Le V Cuisine and Golden Scorpion Tattoo, offers some of the best vegan gluten-free breads, cupcakes, cookies and muffins I’ve had yet, without charging an arm and a leg and without the nasty aftertaste typically left behind by garbanzo/fava bean-based baked goods.
Although not everything in the bakery is vegan (the lemon bars and fudge brownies both contain egg and the marshmallows they use contain gelatin), most of their sweets are vegan-friendly and those that aren’t are clearly marked otherwise.
I’ve been twice so far, both times around closing so the selection was somewhat limited. The first time I got a mini chocolate cake ball, which was a little and the dry side and sort of meh flavor-wise, and a sugar cookie with vanilla frosting, which was awesome. It reminded me of the cookies I’d get from the bakery of a big chain grocery store when I was a kid (in a good way). I also got to sample two of their breads: their vegan white bread and the cinnamon bread, which were both super light and fluffy and delicious.
The next time I went I got a pineapple upside-down cupcake, a chocolate chip cookie, and another frosted sugar cookie (all pictured above). The chocolate chip was okay, but what I really like about their cookies is their chewy, soft, and slightly undone texture. The cupcake was pretty bomb. It was moist and surprisingly light for being gluten-free. The friend I was with got the chocolate/chocolate cupcake and a red velvet without frosting (wtf?) and seemed impressed with both. Since they were just about to close, the owner was sweet enough to throw in an extra pineapple upside-down and a vanilla/vanilla cupcake for us on the house, also super tasty. I’ve only seen two people working there so far, and they are both really helpful and friendly. I will definitely be making this spot a favorite 🙂

Ohh this looks terrific, I’m a vegan desserts fiend.
Thanks for the review and photos -
Really wonderful shop. The owner is extremely friendly and, as the review stated, the products are priced extremely well. They do custom cakes, too.

I have been to this place and I was NOT impressed. The frosting was filled with so much white sugar I got super jittery, a headache, and sick to my stomach.
That aside, I have have much better vegan cupcakes. I don’t plan on going back to this place. But hey, it’s gluten-free! -

I’m not a frosting fan. At all. But I know what I’m getting if I have something with frosting on it. Frosting is 99% sugar. I don’t know what other kind of weird frosting you’re eating.

I’m well aware that frosting contains sugar. However, I have never had a cupcake that made me feel like that. For that reason alone I wouldn’t return. Maybe it wasnttruely vegan. Whatever it was, it wasn’t just me who had that reaction.
They also just weren’t really that tastey and they were kind of messy. Not good. -

I love this place! I have been about 3 times, and the cake is always amazing. Not too sugary at all. ;D

I can’t imagine life without frosting on vegan cupcakes and cakes Too much tastes terrible, of course, but the right amount makes a pastry so amazing and delicious. [But I respect people’s right to veto frosting of course hehe. More for me that way:D]
