jackfruit carnitas from the vegan girl’s guide to life
14July 21st, 2011recipesever since pure luck shut down, i’ve been going through jackfruit withdrawals. their torta was by far one of the best meals in los angeles, and i’m so sad that i’ll never be able to eat it again. thankfully, though, i can still get my jackfruit carnitas fix from melisser elliot’s vegan girl’s guide to life. i definitely haven’t mastered the art of sandwich-making the way pure luck did, but i guarantee you this thing tasted amazing.
melisser’s recipe can be found online here, along with an instructional video. it’s super easy and comes out delicious: all you gotta do is throw some jackfruit, spices, onion and garlic in a crock pot…and 8 hours later you have awesomeness.

i’m addicted to this recipe—it’s so quick and simple, and i can leave the slow cooker going overnight or while i’m at work. if you’re in los angeles, there are tons of places to get jackfruit a grocery warehouse, figueroa produce, and india’s sweets and spices just to name a few.
although this recipe is available online, you should still grab a copy of melisser’s book. not only does it contain many more recipes, but it’s full of great vegan beauty tips, travel advice, and crafts. fun fun!
PS: the original pure luck jackfruit recipe is available online here.

Looks like I need to get a slow cooker.
When are you learning how to make potato pals?

I hate crock pots!! I will never buy one. Isn’t there any other way to cook the jackfruit without a crock pot?
I have a different approach – use the same mix I make for my kick ass pozole but on the jackfruit.
Oh wait – you don’t need a crockpot. You can do it low and slow the old school way, wrapped in foil and put in the oven for a few hours.

I actually made this two days ago. For a more pure luck type of recipe, add some high quality bbq sauce for it to slow cook. Then top it off with some bbq sauce too. I added half a cup of jack and made Jack daniels bbq jackfruit ala SAGE 🙂 delish!

You can cook the reciple on a stoave top for 1.5-2 hours if you don’t have or want to use a slow cooker…it turns out just as good!

Thanks for pointing out A Grocery Warehouse. I had no idea there was a good Asian grocery store in Echo Park. I go down there all the time in the evening so I’ll have to try going earlier to check out this store.
