July 5th, 2011quarrygirlLA restaurants, vegan factory

anyone who is familiar with the vegan scene in los angeles knows that in recent years there has been proliferation of vegetarian thai-inspired restaurants (all with the word “vegan in their name) serving up almost identical menus full of mock meats and salty asian dishes. i honestly can’t keep track of them all, and it seems like there’s one on every corner! vegan express, vegan world, vegan house, vegan plate, vegan glory, you get the idea…they all start to run together in my mind. vegan factory in tarzana (who we’ve featured on the blog before) went so far as to claim on their website, “Vegan Factory is not just another Thai-Vegan Restaurant…”

that sentence will be especially true as of july 8th, when vegan factory will begin serving real animal meat. i think they should probably re-write the rest of the paragraph, though…

a QG reader tipped me off to signs being posted in the restaurant this weekend, warning patrons that on friday it would be vegan no more. i put a call into “vegan factory” and they confirmed they’d be serving meat as of 6/8/11. let’s just hope they change their name.

  • the food had started to suck a while ago, I even went so far as to ask if they had changed management, guess I have my answer…So wrong, gross, and sad

  • Vegan plate in studio city is my fav. Ive had extensive
Conversations with the owner Cookie. She seems very genuine.
She also donated a ton of food to a rescue event we put on.

I agree that a name change is most certainly in order, otherwise this doesn’t make sense!:(

On another note, doesn’t it seem like 2011 is turning into the year of unfortunate closures and conversions in the Los Angeles vegan restaurant scene?

I’m LA born and raised and so disappointed by this turn of events 🙁

I’m hoping a ton of new vegan places will up locally in 2012 and 2013 to balance things out.

Shucks, skipped a word there: I’m hoping a ton of new vegan places will OPEN up locally in 2012 and 2013 to balance things out.

  • That second paragraph looks like it says “horney atmosphere”. Tee hee.

  • Ughhh gross. Yet another reason I hate Tarnaza! First Madelines closes and now this. If they do not change their name people should sue. So disappointing!

  • There’s a restaurant in Sedona that had lots of fish sauce dishes under the title “vegetarian”. Not that it was obviously fish sauce until you actually ate it. Blech. (I actually had a server argue with me that fish sauce was vegetarian. Confusion reigneth.)

I like Vegan Plate in Studio City also.

    ^ Ahaha!! You’re right, I didn’t even catch that at first:p

  • Yeah, there’s a pho place down the street that has a “Vegetarian Vermicelli” that offers a choice of fish sauce or soy sauce. If you don’t specify, you get the fish sauce.

  • In fact, they once even said, “You don’t like the fish sauce?” in a confused tone.

  • Fucking assholes. BOYCOTT.

  • This is pretty lame. My family eats here all the time, but I doubt we will now. No biggie, though, because VEGAN JOINT just opened in the Valley (De Soto/Ventura, you should do a review!) and that place is WAY BETTER than Vegan Factory ever was. And of course, there is always Vinh Loi Tofu, the best!

  • i would rather take our business to Vinh Loi Tofu which is 10x better food with 100x better ownership.

  • As long as they change the name and don’t mislead anyone….it is what it is. Fuck ’em. 🙂

  • My boyfriend and I just drove past the Vegan Factory and I noticed a temporary sign over the restaurant’s signage. I made him turn around so I could read it. The sign was a name change: “Baramii – Vegan and Thai Cuisine.”
