we have been waiting for this moment for AGES! mohawk bend (a vegan-friendly pizza and craft beer heaven brought to us by the folks behind tony’s darts away) is almost ready to open!
check out the official press release after the jump (i edited all the meaty parts out of it—muahaha!), and also have a look at drink eat travel’s pre-opening coverage. I HAVE NEVER BEEN THIS EXCITED ABOUT THE OPENING OF A RESTAURANT! weeee!
MOHAWK BEND IN ECHO PARK: OPENING JUNE 28
Echo Park’s most anticipated restaurant and bar will feature more than 60 California craft beers, select California wines on tap and locally-sourced fare that will appeal to vegans, vegetarians and carnivores alike.Los Angeles (June 2011) – From the folks who brought Burbank the acclaimed little craft beer bar that could – Tony’s Darts Away – comes Mohawk Bend, the bigger, craft-everything restaurant and bar poised to become Echo Park’s go-to dining and drinking destination.
Designed by Spacecraft, the sprawling restaurant is divided into four distinct areas to provide four different dining experiences: a spacious, covered patio overlooking Sunset Boulevard; two bar-seating areas, one facing the open kitchen and one facing a row of gleaming wine and craft beer taps; the pub room, which features a custom-built concrete communal table – and then there’s the Ramona room, a stunning, cathedral-like dining area that boasts skylights and a rustic fireplace. Exposed metal beams, polished concrete floors, a dramatic mosaic of large glass panels and 100-year old brick (uncovered from when the building was home to a vaudeville theater) also help to create a thoroughly modern yet rustic and industrial feel.
“We’re so excited to open in Echo Park and be a part of the Eastside community,” said owner Tony Yanow, who lives in nearby Los Feliz. “With Mohawk Bend, we are really hoping to create a neighborhood restaurant and bar and one that shows our commitment to California with all of the California-based products we use, from our 100-percent California beer, wine and cocktail program to the local, organic ingredients in the kitchen.”
The menu, which will showcase thoughtfully-sourced and seasonal fare that is 60-percent vegan, 20-percent lacto/ovo vegetarian and 20-percent meat – is a collaborative effort from Mohawk Bend’s two executive chefs Randal St. Clair and Sera Pelle. To avoid cross-contamination, there will even be two separate cooking stations, with two separate fryers, one vegan and the other non-vegan.
The open kitchen will feature an 8’ x 5’ custom-built Wood Stone pizza deck where thin-crusted pizzas crafted from organic, California 00 flour (gluten-free potato/corn/rice crust will also be available) will bake at a steady 600 to 700 degrees. For vegans, there’s the “Bitter & Twisted,” with rapini, lemon zest, garlic and chili flakes or “Salad Daze,” with avocado, lemon-dressed lettuces, zucchini, caramelized onion and aioli.
And it’s not just pizzas that will be coming out of the oven. Starters include fire-roasted artichokes and fire-kissed vegetables, from Pelle’s signature roasted cauliflower with turmeric, herbs & pine nuts to potatoes with caramelized onions, roasted garlic cloves, olive oil, sea salt & chili flakes. Also hot from the oven: a variety of cazuelas (“little casseroles”) such as “Tony’s Favorite,” with polenta, leeks, broccoli and vegan cheese, to a Spanish-style potato & onion frittata and of course, desserts such as warm, seasonal fruit crostatas and fresh baked, cast-iron cookies.
True craft beer fans won’t be disappointed with Mohawk’s whopping selection of 65 California beers on tap (plus 5 out-of-state beers on tap from a featured brewer every month), along with a two-firkin cask system for the ale-serious. Mohawk Bend also boasts six (6) California wines all on tap delivered through a custom-made cooler and stainless-steel dispensing. Mohawk’s fully handcrafted cocktail program, which will be helmed by Keith Taylor, will feature a specially cultivated collection of 100, all-California sourced spirits. Specialty libations include the “Herb Alpert,” with Charbay Red raspberry vodka, fresh raspberries, grapes, pomegranate juice & ginger beer; the “Mildred Pierce,” with TRU organic gin, jasmine liqueur, agave nectar, brandied cherries, oranges and lemons, bitters and soda; and the “Valenzuela,” St. George Azul Cristal, Fruit Lab organic orange liqueur, fresh grapefruit juice, strawberries, basil, ginger beer and a float of Crusoe Silver rum.Mohawk Bend is located at 2141 W. Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles CA 90026. The restaurant and bar will be open daily, hours TBD. Phone: 323-545-6216. For more information, visit www.facebook.com/mohawkla.

My favorite part about this place is going to be that it is .09 miles from my house. I literally live around the damn corner! Mmm, Elf and this place all where I can walk to so easily. LOVE.

I mean, I can also easily walk to Brite Spot, Masa, Sage/Kindkreme, Flore, Cowboys and Turbans etc, but this place is like… so close I can’t get lost when I am stumbling drunk from delicious craft beer back to my house close…. 😉
