Vegan Field Report: SLICE, The Perfect Food in NYC
10February 9th, 2011more restaurants (not LA), NYChey peeps! time for a field report on one of my favorite foods ever: NYC PIZZA! this one comes to us from blogger JL goes vegan, as she reports on the super vegan-friendly west village pizzeria, slice. i am booking a trip to manhattan as you read this. no joke!
I attended the NYC book signing party for The Happy Herbivore Cookbook which was held at SLICE (on Hudson Street). I’ve been dying to have a slice of SLICE’s vegan pizza!
I started with the Fresh Salad with Carrot Ginger Dressing…
This is a great, fresh salad. The dressing is good (LOTS of garlic).
This was my first time at a “pizza joint” with vegan choices (you know, other than “hold the cheese”). I went with the server’s suggestion and ordered the Skilled Eggplant.
I ordered the personal pizza size (versus one slice). And…
…I ate the whole thing. Zero regrets. Here’s what I love most. I’m hot and cold with eggplant but the pizza didn’t have an overwhelmingly eggplant taste. It was simply one flavor among many flavors. The sundried tomato pesto (vegan) was amazing.
Finally, I did what anyone would do after eating an entire personal pizza.
I ate a vegan chocolate chip cookie.

As if I didn’t need another restaurant to add to my list for my NYC trip next month…definitely going to try to make it there for a slice or who am I kidding, personal pizza 🙂

Do NOT mess with just a slice, when you can get the personal! 😉 Although, if you wanted to try more than one kind of pizza, you could do several pieces! LOL

Nice review!! And that vegan pizza looks delicious.

Cool, we have not made it to “Slice” yet. We always go to Viva though. And apparently there is a place “Pala” close to Tiengarden that has gluten free & vegan pizzas and late night hours! NY is the BEST vegan city.

If only this place lived up to their hype – The service is inept and unattentive and the owner just doesn’t want to hear any criticism.
One of Slice’s big selling points is that they’re friendly to the Gluten Free community, and as I have Celiac Disease, this caught my eye. Yet three out of the past five times that I have gone to the Hudson street restaurant, I have sat down, ordered, been served beverages and *then* been told by the wait staff that they were out of [gluten free] rice flour, “would you like a salad?”
The pizza was OK, albeit expensive, when they had it, but I don’t like having my time wasted by others’ ineptness and lack of responsibility. My party went there to accommodate me and in the end, no one got what they wanted (the others would have chosen elsewhere and I still did not get a GF meal)
I wrote the owner and her reply basically dismissed me with attitude: she just doesn’t see the problem and stuck to her claim that she’s been serving the GF community for 6 years. Serving them what exactly, disappointment?
