it’s a great time to be vegan in los angeles! this week hugo’s restaurant is introducing tons of new animal-free options, and i can say from personal experience that they are beyond delicious. they’ve permanently brought back and improved some of everyone’s old favorite monthly specials, as well as added some extra good stuff.

the new menu will take effect in studio city today, and in west hollywood tomorrow. here is what you have to look forward to…

vegan carbonara: mushrooms, veggie bacon and garlic sauteed crisp. deglazed with white wine and finished with scallions, vegan cream sauce, and italian parsley. $13.85

the vegan carbonara is back! we have raved about this dish before, and with good reason. i’m so glad to see it has earned a spot on hugo’s regular menu. the stacked pasta dish comes with homemade noodles, smoked mushrooms, veggie bacon, and scallions all in a ridiculously rich vegan cream sauce. honestly, it’s so amazing that we may have to add it to the vegan bucket list next year.

creamy green risotto or pasta: fresh chopped organic leafy greens, broccoli, zucchini and asparagus blended with our creamy cashew and sunflower cheese sauce and spinach-basil purée. tossed with a choice of organic brown rice, house made spaghetti or fusilli. garnished with crispy onions. $13.65

next up, the creamy green risotto: loads of green vegetables including leafy greens, broccoli, zucchini and asparagus all blended with a cashew/sunflower cheese sauce an spinach-basil purée. it comes with your choice of brown rice, spaghetti or fusilli—i went with the rice option, which was divine. the dish also comes topped with the most wonderful battered crispy onions. i LOVE it!

vegan mac and cheese: fusilli pasta with diced onions, garlic, sliced mushrooms and sweet peas in a creamy cashew and sunflower cheese sauce. topped with crispy onions. $7.50

hugo’s is has also added our old favorite special, vegan macaroni and cheese to the regular menu. this is available as both an appetizer (pictured above) for $7.50, and as a full on entree for $12.65. the old special is in the photograph, but i hear they’ve changed it up a bit by topping it with crispy onions rather than potato bread crumbs. i can’t wait to try the new version.

vegan pasta victor: tofu, garlic, sun dried tomato, corn, chilies, cilantro and a light vegan chipotle-cream sauce. $15.65

also brand new to the hugo’s pasta menu, is a vegan version of their famous pasta victor (also pictured at the top of the blog post). this comes with homemade spaghetti, chunks of tofu, sun dried tomatoes, corn, chilies, cilantro, and a nutty chipotle-cream sauce. one bite, and i fell in love with this dish. it’s sweet, spicy, smooth, and creamy all at once.

they’ve also improved their caesar salad with the addition of new vegan croutons. these things are just amazing, and come coated in a cheesy-style sauce.

create a bowl: brown rice, fried plantains, black beans and pico de gallo. $12.65

lastly, hugo’s has completely revamped their create-a-plate section by adding loads of new add in selections, as well as the create-a-bowl option! if you read this blog regularly, you probably know that i’m obsessed with bowls…so this is great news for me. i took the new create-a-bowl for a whirl with some brown rice, spicy black beans, fried plantains, and pico de gallo—delish! with over THREE MILLION combinations to choose from, i know i won’t get sick of this.

what are you waiting for?! get over to hugo’s in studio city…all this stuff is available NOW! and you can find it in west hollywood starting tomorrow. don’t miss it!

  • Rad! Rad! Rad! Rad!!!!!!!!!!! Love the Mac ‘n Cheese, so – glad to see that on the regular menu. I *MISSED OUT* on the Carbonara when it was a special…so very excited to try that! Here’s hoping that one of these days the Soul Food Plate will become a standard menu item!

  • they need to bring that po boy back. that thing was amazing.

    stoked to try the carbonara!

  • po is my homeboy. RIP sickoflettuce 🙁

  • Gauri Radha गौरी राधा

    That all looks great.

  • And here’s hoping for the day when Hugo’s starts DELIVERY service! : )

  • SO excited to try Hugos in WeHo. LOOKS AMAZING!

  • The food a Hugos looks and tastes like something a dirty hippie would serve at a rainbow gathering. Kind of sloppy and lacking flavor- but it fills you up.

  • That’s not true, and it doesn’t even really make sense. Hugo’s is a nice restaurant and their presentation is always great.

  • i love hugo’s. their menu is enormous and diverse. the food is expertly prepared. and the staff and experience are great. everyone i’ve taken there has immediately said they wanted to go back to sample more of the menu (which you could do every day for weeks without repeating a dish, if you were disciplined).

  • oh, also, those photos are beautiful!

  • The great photo of the vegan carbonara makes me think of my favorite Sante La Brea dish: the Sante Alfredo. I LOVE being able to get it with rice noodles, extra Alfredo sauce, and added tempeh! And, unlike Hugo’s, Sante La Brea DELIVERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Thank you so much for the review, QG! I took my meat-loving parents there last night and we all ending up ordering vegan and loving it.
