UPDATE! scroll to the bottom for more pix!

this is some pretty exciting news that i have been dying to post for a while….and now it’s finally time! hugo’s restaurant will be running a vegan mac and cheese special this month that is absolutely amazing. the new specials menu rolls out today in studio city and tomorrow in west hollywood, so make sure you get over and eat it asap.

vegan mac and cheese: fusilli pasta with diced onions, garlic, sliced mushrooms and sweet peas in a creamy cashew cheese. cooked crispy with a potato crumb crust. $7.50

i tried an earlier version of this mac and cheese (mine didn’t have all the amazing sounding vegetables in it), and i was absolutely floored. hugo’s makes their very own cashew cheese sauce in house, and it’s unbelievably flavorful and creamy. the best part of this mac though, is the crispy potato crumb crust, that adds a bit of crunch to every bite. although it had a wet texture, this is nothing like the old school kraft mac and cheese you remember from when you were a kid. this was way better with deeper more full-bodied flavor and a much thicker and richer sauce. absolutely incredible.

i’m actually really sad that hugo’s only decided to run this as a special, rather than put it on their regular menu. los angeles doesn’t have nearly enough vegan mac and cheese; and this is seriously some of the best around. you gotta get over there and order tons of this stuff; let’s make them re-think their decision.

so remember, this mac and cheese is available today in studio city and tomorrow in west hollywood tomorrow. go eat it up, and lemme know what you think!

  • Just had the M Cafe mac and cheese last night.

I can’t wait to compare it with Hugo’s new offering!

  • Madeleine Bistro’s Kaesespaetzle (German mac ‘n cheese)with bacon bits is one of the best things I’ve ever ever had, and its on the menu year round. BUT, Hugo’s sounds SO good.. I love that crunchy topping.

  • I love macaroni and cheese! I’m going to have to try this for sure 🙂

  • I would love to try this, but without the onions. Why would mac need onions???

  • They had to go putting onions in the mac and cheese, huh? That’s the best way to make sure I will not order it. I’m just going to reiterate that I would like Hugo’s to add my favorite Hippie Hemp Seed Salad to the permanent menu! I’d order it every time!

  • I had the vegan soy chorizo quesadilla at Hugo’s in West Hollywood last Monday. Amazing. Then I went back just a few days later and it disappeared from the menu. I was told its not coming back. So bummed. 🙁

  • i just had the mac and cheese for lunch today! it’s pretty awesome. not very cheesy tasting but still delicious. i liked the addition of the mushrooms and peas, but the crumb topping was the best part!

  • ps the onion flavor wasn’t very strong and there weren’t chunks of onions in it.

  • Tried it last night…onions weren’t overpowering. To me, it’s more like a casserole than mac & cheese, but the crumb topping is great. IMHO, the best vegan mac & cheese is @ Stuff I Eat…perfectly seasoned and really tastes like mac & cheese should.

  • As great as these photos look I couldn’t have been more disappointed with Hugo’s! We got the…

    • Mac & cheese appetizer
    • The Club
    • Shepard’s Pie

…And all were super bland. It seemed like someone who doesn’t know much about vegan cooking really wanted to try and appease vegans. They did absolutely nothing with the tofu and all the creamy stuff was flavorless.

I liked what their menu had to offer and everything was indicated well, but ultimately all the food was pretty mediocre.

  • Had the hugo’s mac on Friday… great crispy topping, great mac and loved the veggies… but it was missing a little something… it was a little too sweet for me… maybe it was the peas. Still, happy to see a vegan alternative on the menu!

  • I tried the mac n cheese on Valentine’s Day and I was pretty blown away- if there’s a better vegan mac n cheese option in LA, I’d love to hear about it, because I was super impressed by the cheese.
