hey everyone! today’s field report comes to us from nyc where kris from veganscraps has reviewed one of the city’s best kept secrets, jivamuktea cafe. the all vegan spot looks like a haven for tasty yet healthy eats, and i can’t wait to hit it up. great find!

marinated beet salad: a blend of spring mix, marinated beets, walnuts (I subbed for cranberries), carrots, cucumbers and sliced granny smith apples. $12 plus rosemary seitan/spicy tempeh. $5

After discovering JivamukTea Cafe a couple of months ago, I find myself going in to eat at least 3 times a week! This cafe is one of the hidden gems of NYC. JivamukTea Cafe is part of the JivamukTea Yoga Studio in Union Square. You would have no way of knowing this fantastic cafe existed unless someone told you (this is me telling you!).

JivamukTea offers a 100% vegan menu including raw soups, salads, protein dishes, smoothies, amazing desserts, sandwiches, breakfast toasts, and hot drinks! The atmosphere is peaceful and relaxing and the staff are always welcoming! Now let’s get to the food:

    coconut green tea $2

Today I started off with a “Coconut Green Tea”, Fresh Green Tea Loose Leaf with a delicious hint of Coconut. This is really the *best* cup of green tea I have ever had (and I’m a HUGE green tea drinker). It tastes like a dessert in a cup! So amazing!

Next one of my favorite dishes is the “Marinated Beet Salad” (pictured at the top of the post). This salad is unbelievably tasty! There are so many flavors popping out at you with every bite. A bit of spicy heat from the tempeh with the creaminess of the seitan, then all of those fresh organic vegetables on top…wow. A huge healthy bowl of delight!

The next dish is one of the most popular dishes at JivamukTea- because it offers so many options. “The Yogi’s Choice” is a choice of 3 side items (some choices include: Rosemary Seitan, Spicy Tempeh, Quinoa, Brown Rice, Pinto Beans, Kale, Coleslaw, Steamed Veggies, Sprouts, Kasha) served with one of the many delicious dressings. Today I chose *Rosemary Seitan* *Spicy Tempeh* *Quinoa* * Coleslaw* with the Mustard Vinaigrette. This dish is so scrumptious and healthy!

    yogi's choice $12

Served in a deep bowl with a soft quinoa and flavorful proteins, and delicious crunchy coleslaw! Oh my word- so dang good!!

As if the meal alone wasn’t enough to leave me smiling for the rest of the day, I had to dig into their amazing case of baked goods! I have found my new favorite vegan cookie.

    oatmeal raisin cookie $3.89

Fresh Gooey Oats Mixed with delicious Raisins baked together to form this fantastic healthy treat… “My name is Krysten and I’m addicted to Jivamuktea’s Oatmeal Raisin Cookie”… REALLY – You have not enjoyed being vegan until you have sunk your teeth into this cookie. It melts in your mouth.. spectacular… I really cannot say enough about JivamukTea Cafe.. Union Square needed this healthy vegan cafe for all of us NY vegan foodies to enjoy!! You have to make time to stop in- you won’t be sorry!!!

    Looks very healthy!!

  • I live in Manhattan and have never heard of this place. Great find!

  • How have I missed this place?! I must try it soon! (big fan of veganscraps…nice to see her post here!)

  • Looks seriously awesome!

  • You really MUST try this place. it is my favorite in the city!! Thanks JL!:):)

  • Seriously, this is my favorite restaurant in the city! The pictures and description definitely don’t do it justice. They make it look way too old skool hippy/healthy veg, and sure, I guess you could order that way, but it can also definitely satisfy and impress fat-loving foodies too! I’ve brought several omnis here and they all loved it. My faves are the spicy tempeh salad with spicy peanut dressing, the BLT, and the ridiculously good burritos (with seitan, chimichurri sauce, beans, sour cream, etc). The brunch also rocks so hard!

  • You guys have to check out the yoga there too. They seriously push veganism (which is way awesome in my book). Parts of the studio even posed in “FurFree” Peta ads. They incorporate Sanskrit Chanting, Music, Dharma Talks (A LOT about Ahimsa, or non-harming to ALL creature), etc…I now take as many classes here everytime I come to NY.
It is such a “Hip” yoga studio, and I think that it has exposed a lot of people to veganism. It’s so cool that they make it easy to flirt with it before and after class. The space is beautiful also. You guys must check this place out, and don’t forget the yoga. Vegans and Non-Vegans alike will love it! Google Sharon Gannon and David Life!!
