• mooi introducing raw vegan pizza + a contest!

    August 6th, 2010quarrygirlLA restaurants, mooi

hey everyone, i’ve got some pretty exciting news! starting next week (probably on wednesday), mooi in echo park will be offering 4 flavors of raw vegan pizza. the restaurant has featured pizza as a special before, and it was so popular that they decided to add it to the regular menu.

the best part about all this though, is that mooi wants YOU to come up with their newest pizza flavor. all you gotta do is leave a comment with the type of raw vegan pizza you’d like to see at the restaurant. the winner will get a complimentary dinner for two at mooi, as well as their pizza choice added to the menu! neato, huh?

but first, let me tell you about the fantastic pizzas mooi is gonna start carrying next week. i got a sneak peak at these babies and i was completely blown away.

margherita: sweet chunky marinara, olive oil, macadamia mozzarella, fesh basil leaves & sliced tomato.

the margherita was my favorite—simple flavors, but perfectly executed. it came with chunky marinara, oilve oil, macadamia mozzarella, fresh basil, and sliced tomato. i gotta admit, i am a huge fan of cooked pizza, and this thing still won me over big time. the “bread” crust was ridiculously convincing, and the macadamia cheese was TO DIE FOR. i am really beginning to think nut-based cheese is the best tasting vegan cheese there is. i was seriously shocked by how good this pizza was, maybe it’s because i didn’t know quite what to expect.

hawaiian style: BBQ sauce, eggplant bacon, carmelized onions & pineapple.

next up, i tried the hawaiian style pizza with bbq sauce, eggplant bacon, caramelized onions, and pineapple. i am usually not a fan of this pizza flavor, but i quite enjoyed the raw version. the insanely delicious eggplant bacon and onions are what did it for me. that bacon is just ridiculous. this pizza was pretty crunchy with a great texture, and a wonderful combination of salty and sweet flavors.

red pepper and sundried tomato: red pepper and sundried tomato sauce, anise & fennel italian walnut sausage, macadamia cheese & kalamata olives.

there was also a red pepper and sundried tomato pizza, with anise and fennel italian walnut sausage, macadamia cheese, and kalamata olives. honestly, i didn’t even try this one because i hate bell peppers. it sure was pretty though, and i tasted a bit of the walnut sausage, which was excellent.

lemon basil pesto and garlic aioli: lemon basil pesto sauce, garlic aioli, mixed greens (mustard, kale), fresh basil leaves & marinated shiitake mushrooms.

lastly, there was the lemon basil pesto and garlic aioli pizza—a basil garlic sauce topped with mixed greens, basil leaves, and marinated shiitake mushrooms. like the others, this pizza was extremely tasty. nice fresh ingredients with a rich pesto sauce…what’s not to like?!

now that you’ve seen and heard about all these pizzas, you gotta get over to mooi next week and try them. even if raw pizza sounds a bit strange to you, i think these will knock your socks off. i have tried a couple different raw pizzas before, and these are definitely the BEST, and the only ones that come close to resembling “the real thing.” the crust really tastes like crust, the cheese really tastes like cheese, etc. seriously, i fell in love with just one bite.

oh, now about that contest. you wanna make up your own pizza flavor and win a dinner for two at mooi?!?! details after the jump.

    CONTEST —> —–> —–>

here’s what you need to do to win:

1.) you must come up with what you think would be the perfect raw pizza flavor. get creative, and don’t hold back!

2.) you must leave your real, valid email address when you submit your comment. (the public won’t see this, just me…so i can contact you if you win!)

4.) you must live somewhere near LA, so that if you win, you can have dinner at mooi.

that’s it! a winner will be chosen and announced on monday, august 16th. he or she will win a complimentary dinner for 2 at mooi, and also have their pizza flavor featured on the mooi restaurant menu.

    good luck!

  • I’m thinking a thai inspired veggie curry pizza with maybe a coconut curry pesto for the sauce, lots of tasty veggies, some lemon grass infused cashew cheese–

    just my thoughts!

  • I’m terrible at coming up with food ideas so I’ll refrain from making suggestions for the contest.
I just wanted to say that the Hawaiian-style pizza above looks terrific!! I am a huge fan of pineapple on pizza, that’s my favourite topping of all time.

  • Holy jeez, Alfredo Pizza would be awesome (maybe made with cashew cream?) Throw on things like mushrooms, spinach, sundired tomatoes, or artichoke hearts. Crap, now I’m hungry.

  • hmmm… how about a nice california pizza: arugula, shitake mushroom, avocado and macadamia cheese on a tomato sauce base.

  • I don’t know how creative this is, but I’d love a pizza with vegan goat cheese and basil pesto. Maybe some sun-dried tomato up in there too!

  • hows about a reuben pizza with sauerkrat, savory dehydrated mushrooms, sun dried tomato/cashew aioli as a sort of russian dressing, carmalized onions, and macadamia mozarella! or buffalo with shredded carrots, shaved celery, a nut based ranch sauce, and raw/vegan blue cheese? too many ideas!

  • How about a Southwestern one with avocado and cilantro!

  • Mexican Pizza! Make your mouth say Arriba!

  • I would love to see a “Fire Pizza” loaded up with jalepenos, habenero, onions, garlic, chili (maybe something close to buffalo sauce?) and topped with a super cool cashew cheese to help tame the fire just a bit!

  • I’d dig a sushi/japanese inspired pizza with some ginger, bean sprouts and maybe a wasabi aioli

  • Would love something Mediterranean: Olives, pepperchinis, red onion, vegan bleu cheese/feta and maybe some pine nuts? hmmm…hmmm.

  • Breakfast pizza…. Scrambled tofu, sausage and a “english muffin” crust

“Pastrami” pizza…. veg “pastrami” with mustard drizzle on a sourdough crust

  • Indian Pizza… mango chutney, vegan “paneer”, cilantro, veggies (cauliflower, potato, spinach, zucchini, etc.)…spice it up!

  • Wooow, these look great! How about Beet Lovers pizza? Thinly sliced, spicy beets, kinda prosciutto-style? Beets make everything better…

  • My fave pizza place back in North Carolina made this amazing dessert pizza. The cheese was like a cream cheese and it was covered in fresh fruit and some kind of honey drizzle. I would keel over with joy if Mooi made their own version!

  • Those raw pizzas look awesome, there’s a restaurant in Minneapolis that does raw pizza but I haven’t tried them yet, I better change that soon!

  • i’m thinking tahini-based sauce, topped with onion, cilantro, and avocado. Mmmm! or, a pizza with nut cheese, jicama, salsa & avocado. I’m hungry.

  • something simple and somewhat traditional: pine nuts, olive oil, rosemary, and rawmesan cheese (brewers yeast, walnuts, sunflower seeds and sea salt) with micro greens on the top. italian and californian.

  • PIZZA ALLA PUTTANESCA! garlic, onions, olives, capers, chili peppers and tomatoes. My fav italian pasta made raw and pizza…how could you go wrong?

and I’m bad at coming up with things…but what the hey.

pineapple, tomato, basil, avocado/guacamole-ish “sauce”, pepper, onion, and maybe some oregano in there?

Wow… I felt so powerful coming up with that and typing that. muahahaha?

  • what do they use for the crust?

  • Cali Chopped Salad Pizza with marinara and chopped veggies (whatever is farmer’s market fresh) and avocado.

  • for the topping, dehydrated lemony-salty broccoli with a tahini-lemon-ginger sauce maybe with clumps of fluffy nut-cheese and the rust could include black and/or regular sesame seeds… random, but could totally work!

  • “Artichoke Heart” pizza
with artichoke hearts, hearts of palm with a balsamic vinegar based sauce and an appropriate nut cheese (maybe pine nuts). Yum! I guess that wouldn’t be strictly raw though… hmmm.

  • How about a faux lox and garlic herb “cream cheese” pizza topped with chopped tomato, red onion, parsley, pecans, and capers? (to make faux lox just marinate thin slices of red bell pepper in some namu shayu, date paste, and other spices) Yay! Mooi you are THE Business!

  • ohh or make the lox out of re hydrated dulse blended together with red peppers, citrus juice, nama shayu, garlic, onions, and spices, then place mix in a dehydrator using the fruit roll up method.
