vegans! a couple days ago we reported that our favorite santa barbara restaurant, pizza guru, had temporarily closed down due to some….um…legal issues.

thankfully…they have re-opened as of today, and our friend melisser from the urban housewife was even there to try the pizza on their first day back in business.

she sent us this picture, and said the pizza was delicious. whew, glad to hear they are back in action. pizza guru also posted the following message on their facebook page this morning…

let’s hope they stay open for good this time, and that all the shady issues are behind them. i don’t know about you, but i am booking a trip to santa barbara to eat at pizza guru ASAP. don’t take the fact that there is pizza this awesome just a couple hours away for granted. GO, while you still can!

  • Oh cool!! Good news. I’ll be able to try their vegan pizza after all 😀

  • Still must be very embarrassing for them. Would love to hear the whole story.

  • Seriously, we expect the full scoop! If you can’t depend on quarrygirl for vegan investigative journalism where are we going to go?

  • Free the Pizza Boys who fight for truth and justice and are doing the work of saints making great pizza and taking care of those in need! Come November, California must stand up for Pizza and other herbs and spices.

  • Yes, yum! I stopped there on my way back from a weekend in SB wine country and it sopped up all the syrah in my belly with vegan tasty perfection! Loved it!

  • This official letter just out today from Pizza Guru. Very glad they reopened!

  • Sorry I forgot to include the letter… here it is.

PIZZA GURU REOPENS: The uptown restaurant Pizza Guru at 3534 State Street has reopened. Owner Joshua Braun sent a letter this morning to SB.com with his perspective on recent events that have been widely publicized in local news outlets:

    Hi John,

We noticed that you have Pizza Guru in the cemetery on SB.com. I am writing to let you know that we are open for business and very busy, thanks to our recent, uh, “PR campaign.” I guess it is really true that no press is bad press.

In case you weren’t already aware, I was the founder and Executive Director of the medical cannabis collective known as Hortipharm. Hortipharm has long been considered the most transparent and legitimate collective in Santa Barbara, and was voted best dispensary in Santa Barbara three years running in the Independent’s Readers Poll. Why law enforcement believes we were “operating outside the scope of the Compassionate Use Act” is still a mystery to me, but I am confident that the error will be remedied before long.

As for Pizza Guru laundering money from Hortipharm, nothing could be farther from the truth. My wife, Dayli, has done an amazing job turning the place around since she took over the business–apparently such a good job that law enforcement decided that it couldn’t be legitimate. Fortunately, we have meticulous records to demonstrate that their assertions are ludicrous, and I am furious that they dragged her into this fiasco. Her business and my collective were completely separate.

Our loyal customer base, from Guru as well as from Hortipharm, has been quick to support us through these trying times and we are excited that everyone now knows about Pizza Guru.

    Yours Truly,
    Joshua Braun
