25March 6th, 2010cruzer pizza, LA restaurantsUPDATE 3/6/10: i went to cruzer last night and they were selling huge slices of the candy bar cheesecake for only $6.50 (down from $12)!! go get them while they last!
check out my slice:
original post:
i have some pretty exciting news for los angeles vegans. starting today, some incredibly rich and decadent desserts made by chef dave anderson of madeleine bistro will be available at cruzer pizza in los feliz. as of now they have candy bar cheesecake, raspberry cheesecake, and vegan cannolis.
i was lucky enough to try these desserts a few weeks ago at a cruzer tasting, and i can honestly say they will BLOW. YOUR. MIND!
the vegan cannoli was perfect, even better than the one we raved about from candle 79. a light and delicately fried pastry shell piped full of fresh vegan cream and lightly dusted with powder sugar. pure heaven!
and the cakes were every bit as good as the cannoli. they consisted of the most moist and delicious vegan cheesecake imaginable, infused with either homemade butterfinger and reeses-style candies or laced with thick raspberry swirls. pictured at the top of the post is the candy bar cheesecake i sampled last month, but the ones for sale at cruzer now are a little different. these cakes are shaped like rectangles rather than circles, and are topped with homemade whipped cream.
i don’t know how long this stuff will last at cruzer, because they are miles ahead of most vegan treats available. we are talking high-quality, gourmet, dense and delicious desserts here. and seriously, where else in LA can you get a vegan cannoli?!?! rush to get them while they are still available.

What? No cussing! I can’t possibly trust this review.
Those desserts look so good. Now I just have to figure when the hell (cuss word!) I can get over there and get some.

I was never into cheesecake, but I think I owe it to myself to at least give these a shot.

Quarrygirl, I LOVE YOU. And I love your blog. I went to Cruzer just for this tonight and it was the best dessert ever.
I would pay a subscription fee for this valuable info. Thanks from the bottom of my heart.

Those look outstanding! I need to try Cruzer again. I’ve only been there once (before they went 100% vegan) and I have to say the pizza crust left me wanting more. But the desserts give me a great reason to give them another shot.

That vegan candy bar cheesecake looks out of this world. If I still lived in san diego I would make this a day trip! Thanks for sharing!

does anyone know what the deserts are made of (i.e. cashew, soy, etc.)? I asked the guy who was working and he didn’t know. I have a really severe nut allergy, so I don’t want to risk it if it’s cashew-based. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Had a pizza there yesterday (chicken and cilantro…very, very good) but passed on the cheesecake at $10 a slice.

Dude! I called Cruzer this weekend to get prices on the desserts, thinking I might bring them to a potluck I was going to…
$6 for one cannoli and $12 for a slice of cake!!!!!!!

Damn that’s expensive. I can’t justify the regular prices of these deserts, as delicious as they may be. I’m already spending plenty on my regular meals, and I can get great deserts from places like Mani’s for half the price.
I want to support vegan places and I often drive well out of my way to do so. But man…this is too rich for my blood.

$12 was for a SLICE??? Holy shit. When I saw that before, I assumed that it HAD to be for a whole cheesecake, there was no way that was for just one slice. Goddam…..

ordered a medium pizza and a caesar salad for like 23 bucks. Pizza was tiny, and really bad. They were also out of all the desserts. Cruizer fail! go spend $10 bucks at whole foods and get some daiya, sauce, and their pizza dough. You shit will taste 50 times better

last time i was there, it was almost TWICE the price you mentioned. i’ll give them a shot at $6.50.

Cruzer has changed ownership as of last Monday. The new management had no idea what my $25 Pricewave coupon was and subsequently only gave us $15 off our meal : (.
The new owner did tell us that another entirely vegan Cruzer would be opening in Santa Monica by the end of the year! It’ll have sit down seats and such.
