ladies and gentlemen, i think we have a winner…

for the past two months, we’ve been on a search to find the best vegan club sandwich in los angeles and i think our search has finally ended. i thought to myself that the contest was over when i tried the incredible club at m cafe….but surprisingly the real food daily club has it beat!

the club triple decker: seitan tempeh bacon, avocado, lettuce, tomato, vegenaise, sour dough bread. served with tossed house or caesar salad. $13.75

the club sandwich at real food daily is beyond awesome. first off, it’s huge…and it comes with this thick breaded seitan that’s moist in the middle and crispy on the outside, along with large strips of salty tempeh bacon. what really makes this thing though, is the bread. it’s soft and fluffy with just the perfect amount of chew. agh, so good! add to that fresh produce and creamy vegenaise, and this sandwich is a mixture of purely delicious flavors and textures.

i’m not gonna lie, there is a down side. the club at RFD is expensive as hell. i mean almost $14 for a sandwich and a small side salad?! that’s practically highway robbery. the thing is just so damn good though, i’d be lying if i said it didn’t deserve to win. it’s also worth noting that i got my sandwich to go, as eating in at real food daily can be an extremely unpleasant experience.

    Real Food Daily
    414 N La Cienega Blvd

    and

    514 Santa Monica Blvd.

so what do you think? did we miss any amazing club sandwiches? do you agree with the winner?

  • I like the food at RFD, but think it’s way too expensive. I can create similar dishes at home for MUCH less money.

However, on any prime night there’s almost always a wait at SM, so apparently it’s NOT too expensive.

  • I’ll stick w/the vegan club at Tierra Cafe for over half the price.

  • such a good fucking sandwich , stoked you finally gave it a try!

  • I must try this sandwich. Thanks for the lovely delicious-looking photos!!

  • I’ve ate at Real Food Daily a couple times a month for the past few years and have never had a bad experience. The host or hostess has always been very friendly as well as the wait staff. Don’t let one person’s supposed “extremely unpleasant experience” sour you on some of the best vegan dining in L.A.!

  • This feels like deja-vu! I ordered this on monday, before heading to Zara on the promenade to shop (hehe). It was totally delish and I added cashew cheese to mine, Mmmmh!
I agree with Kevin though, I have been to both RFD locations many, many times and have never had any issues! I did have to wait to be seated once, but other than that, I love RFD!

  • UGH, sorry. I think RFD is overpriced, overrated and mediocre. Bland food, blah atmosphere & nothing special at all. I’ve never had a decent meal at either location & wild horses /hungry peeps could NOT drag me back.

  • Definitely try the vegan club at Nite Moon Cafe before you call it a day.

  • RFD is beyond amazing. its simply my favorite resteraunt and ive been to almost every vegan place in l.a (omitting the abundance of every thai vegan place obvi)
i have no idea what is going on when you go to rfd, i always have a simply wonderful and pleseant experience. then again if you are only goin to the weho location… i coudl possibly see that, ive had a eh time there too, but im a santa monica girl and the santa monica location is AWESOME.
go THERE and have MANU as your server.

sure RFD is expensive, btu the quality of the food, service and location makes it every bit worth it. i eat there at least every sunday for brunch and im extatic that you chose RFD as your winner. they deserve it.
next time go to sm. weho in general is blechhh

  • sorry my first post had too many typos, so you can delete the first one…
    lots of <3

  • Can’t say we’ve had this sandwich, but have had several uninspired meals at both locations, most recently the bbq chop tofu salad. It was watery and awful. I call it vague-an food at highway robbery prices. We will never go back. BTW, if the food doesn’t turn your stomach, this might: a couple guys with a lions share of the company are major meat/pastrami(etc.)eaters . Damn hypocrites.

  • I must say I like RFD! It was the first vegan place I patronized when visiting LA. I do think it is a bit overpriced, but with regards to the food and service I have never had a problem!

    Need to try this club!

  • If you like the bread in the RFD club, may I suugest ordering the club at M with sourdough, instead of multigrain? I think that may push M back to your top spot.

  • The vegan club at Mother’s Market/Kitchen over in Newport Beach was pretty damn good if I do say so myself… never been to RFD but I suppose I should give it a try.

  • RFD is surely higher in pricing but also at the top of the most reliable vegan establishments in Los Angeles. It’s the one place I don’t have to worry about a thing not being vegan. It’s also insanely trendy, so sure it can be a pain in the neck on the inside. I always have a good time when i’m with a group of people so i’m not stuck at a tiny table overhearing 4 different conversations. Their basic menus will get you the best deals too. You can duplicate their $14.00 t.v. dinner through the basics for $9.95. I’m thankful they brought their prices down, a year ago they were even more insane so I stopped going for a while. But yeah it’s definitely one of the longest standing vegan establishments in Los Angeles. The one in West Hollywood serves beer & wine and the one in santa monica is byob. It’s also mostly organic they have a nice daily chart on the wall. Blah, blah blah… my personal sales pitch is over.

  • I agree it’s one of if not the best vegan club I’ve had, but they’re just so inconsistent. I usually get takeout, and I’ll have the club one day & it’s amazing, a few days later, downright bad. The same goes for their other food. For those prices, it’s just not worth chancing it very often.

  • I tried this sandwich at RFD and I definitely was NOT impressed. It was super dry and nothing really special at all. Plus it is ridiculously expensive. I’ve been to many many vegan restaurants in LA, and RFD is definitely at the bottom of the list. The food is okay, the prices are sky high, and the service is very pushy.

  • I’ve never gotten the RFD hate. The service is hit or miss and it’s not the cheapest eats in town, but I’m always happy with the food (save the burger, which I’m not a fan of). Their club is my go-to comfort food and I order it at least half the time I’m there.

  • i’ve been to RFD only once, because i paid $11 for a dinky, sub-par reuben with no side. i’ve been reluctant to go back… but with that being said i totally want to try this now as well as the nachos.

  • I’ve only tried the Santa Monica location. I really wanted to love RFD, but they sure made it hard! The food was inconsistant. I have ordered the club many times and it was either juicy and fresh, or hard overcooked and cold (like it had been re-heated). I’m not really picky with food, I am a believer of you get what you pay for. However I felt I was paying way to much for my food to be blah. Still I gave many chances, and finally had to cut them off and stop throwing my money away.

  • I am not a big fan of RFD .I find it “cafeteria” food- really bland .That being said I do like the club.I order it with hemp bread and it is still really tasty.
Most of their stuff tastes the same and feels mass produced but I can drink their peanut sauce straight from the cup…YUM!

  • I had the vegan club at RFD recently and I do have to say that it was overall way too dry and the tofu was especially really dry. Not even a little extra veganaise would have salvaged this dish. My biggest expectation from a restaurant (especially from an over priced one) is that they deliver quality food CONSISTENTLY! To me that is what defines the success of a great restaurant
    FYI
** THE BEST VEGAN CLUB: NITE MOON CAFE (GOLDEN BRIDGE YOGA STUDIO) Hands down!!

  • I like the Vegan Club from Manis the best!
