sorry to start this weekend on a bummer note, but i just learned that the all vegan restaurant casa de tree in west LA will close its doors with no plans to re-open.

we have reviewed casa de tree a couple times, and my only regret is that i didn’t eat there way more often. they have a good mix of heavy and healthy food, an extensive menu, and even a pay by weight salad bar. all beautiful and animal-free.

katsu sandwich: homemade organic seitan katsu, cabbage, mustard and italian miso sauce. served with salad and side dish. $8.95

their website states that they will be closed as of tomorrow saturday january 16th…but i called the restaurant and they said they will be open tomorrow from 10am to 9pm. you should seriously get over there and try their food before it’s all gone. just be sure to call ahead and double check the hours, since there seems to be some conflicting info.

SO SAD TO SEE YET ANOTHER VEGAN BUSINESS CLOSE! we will miss ya, casa de tree!

  • That is very sad. I live close and have never seen the place with more than one or two people in it.

  • Ah shoot! I pretty much never go to Culver City, coming from the Valley. But I really wanted to try their curry pan (カレーパン).

  • Holy crap, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! This is one of my favorite westside spots. SO SAD 🙁

I’m totally going to stock up on curry donuts and anpans!

  • I’ve never heard of this one either. I guess that explains a lot about these restaurants that are closing.

  • AWWW man!!! I <3'd that place. Only went three times a year or so ago. I LOVED their Chicken Katsu sandwich!!! *Drool* Sooo sad 🙁

  • I’m sad and embarrassed to say I forgot about this place after going for lunch a few times and really enjoying it.

  • Oh no!!! Unfortunately I’m not too surprised–the place was always empty. I think they were just lacking in the PR department. Bummer.

  • NOOOO! i only got to go to this place once and the food was SO GOOD! i was the only person in there, though 🙁

  • Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!! 🙁 🙁 🙁
Best vegan tuna sandwich in the entire world 🙁
I would have gone there every day if I didn’t live in Long Beach

  • this is why we as vegans must support vegan restaurants over non-vegan restaurants! forget the chipoltes of the world that kill animals.

  • I went to their Torrance location and bought a brownie and a oatmeal raisin cookie-they were both terrible!

  • So sad… I loved their food. I used to live in the Japanese area over on Sawtelle, with loads of places with tasty-but-not-vegan Japanese food, and Casa De Tree was the one place that had veganized pretty much all that.

But I have to say, when they moved from Torrance to West L.A., they took forever to open, almost never updated their website, had odd hours and no menu for months, and would close for extended periods of time every holiday. I guess lack of customers and restricted hours/menus is a vicious cycle. I always wanted them to come to my neighborhood, with more foot traffic, vegans, and fellow Japanese businesses!
