it’s no secret that i’ve been eating at vegan-friendly restaurants all over los angeles for quite some time. however, throughout the last several years of living here as a vegan, for some reason i never bothered to check out fatty’s in eagle rock. the all vegetarian restaurant on colorado boulevard has high prices, gourmet menu items that i can’t pronounce, strange opening hours, and a pretty dairy-heavy menu. for so long i just assumed the place wasn’t for me. BOY WAS I WRONG. i finally had the chance to check out fatty’s a few weeks ago and it rocked my my vegan socks off.

my husband and i ended up at fatty’s on accident. we had an epic double-date dinner planned to attend shojin’s 1 year anniversary party with lex and kristin of vegan-la, which also coincided roughly with when they would be leaving los angeles to embark on backpacking trip around europe. turned out shojin was way too crowded to eat at (i’m talking line-out-the-door savage nightmare), so we headed out to fatty’s eagle rock for of the best vegan meals i’ve had in this town.

fudgey: a two layer chocolate bundt cake with chocolate ganache, toasted coconut and pecan frosting with a creamy center. $8

just because it was so fucking scrumptious, lemme start by telling you about the fudgey. this was the dessert that lex and kristin ordered and were kind enough to share with us (had this been my cake, nobody else at the table woulda got even a bite of it!), and we all agreed it was delicious. the thing was big enough to feed a boatload of people and it came with layer after layer of sugary goodness. chocolate, coconut, and pecan creaminess made this one of the best sweet things i’ve ever encountered. dense and decadent, this cake could fool ANYONE who is addicted to eggs and milk. nothing about it tasted vegan. fudgey is the perfect name for this ridiculously fudgey dish.

now that we got over the best thing i have tasted in a while out of the way, let’s take it back to the start. my husband and i shared a few appetizers, both of which were on point.

far east rolls: veggie ginger chicken, cabbage and carrot with plum and peanut sauce. $6

the far east rolls were definitely a win. salty meat and pureed vegetables in a very thin but crispy shell. they were light but ridiculously delicious at the same time. we also shared the bread and olive oil which sounds boring but was nothing short of kick ass. freshly baked soft bread along with the finest pairing of gourmet oil and vinegar took this starter to the next level.

bread and olive oil: cold pressed california extra virgin olive oil with balsamic reduction and home made wheat rolls. $5

i ordered the one vegan pizza that fatty’s has to offer, the cadillac, and was quite impressed. while it didn’t come with any sort of fake cheese, it was covered in broccoli, cauliflower, tomatoes, pine nuts and a creamy pesto sauce. the mozzarella wasn’t even missed! the crust was thin, crispy, and really flavorful. definitely a more gourmet take on pizza, and very different from the nyc-style stuff i’m used to.

the cadillac: roasted vegetables of the day, pine nuts and crushed sesame seeds with basil pesto spread. $9

main dish-wise, my husband went with the paella. basically a mixture of exotic mushrooms, quality vegetables, and wild rice. while real paella contains meat, seafood and sometimes even snails, i can tell you the vegan version is way better. everything about it was fresh and tasty.

paella: organic oyster, hen of the woods and shitaki mushrooms, wild rice, corn, hearts of palm, heirloom tomatoes, olives and sweet peas with saffron. $18

the vegan dessert menu at fatty’s is quite impressive, boasting dishes like chocolate fondue and cotton candy. it gets tricky though, because you have to order the fondue way in advance and you can only order the cotton candy according to the menu, “when mrs. dingle is here.” (wtf!) they also offer a belgian ale float, but were out of the ale when we tried to order. in addition to the fudgey at the top of the post, i ordered the muddy duck, which was basically a cup of espresso with a scoop of soy ice cream inside. it was pretty good, but probably not worth 6 bucks.

i didn’t try any of lex or kristin’s food, but they both really dug what they ordered, so i may as well show you the pix.

sloppy joe: fatty's original veggie ground meat, red bell peppers, carrots stewed in our mildly spicy joe sauce; served with puff pastry and topped with arugula, green onions and chimichurri dressing. $14

kristin got the vegan sloppy joe which was more like a pastry than a traditional sandwich (pictured above), and lex got the vegan ravioli (below). they covered their meal over on vegan-la if you want to check it out.

fatty’s also has really great ambiance. when i hear eagle rock, i don’t think “classy,” but fatty’s definitely is. it has a hip loft/warehouse kind of feel with exposed beams and tiny little white lights strewn everywhere. we got the tip from sick of lettuce that you must call ahead and make a reservation. we called about 30 minutes before we got there and it was fine…i guess they just throw you major ‘tude if you show up without one.

i really can’t wait to get back to fatty’s. we had an amazing dinner, and there’s so much more on the menu i’m dying to try. oh, and fatty’s is also conveniently located very close to the york, so you can get your drink on before enjoying a fine meal. although the food was great, it was a bummer saying goodbye to friends who are probably off swimming in the adriatic right now. the vegan scene in los angeles is definitely missing something until lex and kristin get back. until then, get your asses to fatty’s!

  • Fatty’s has been on my radar for quite a while. I really want to try the chocolate fondue. Hmm…maybe I can convince someone to take me for my birthday (but, of course, not on my actual birthday this year cuz they’re not open on Tuesdays! WTF?).

  • vegyogini – i have the same problem, my birthday is on monday this year and i wanted to have a birthday dinner there! i suppose i could do it on the friday before, but that’s not special.

i REALLY want to go back there, especially after seeing all of these yummy looking pictures! mmmm, fudgeyyyyyy

  • That Fudgey thing is ALIVE people! Make sure you give the plate a bump and watch it jiggle for a few minutes. Was such a great dinner! Can’t wait to do it again!!!

  • Can i tell you how much i just love your website?!? you have the best vegan restaurant blog i’ve ever seen. i live in NE LA, so a lot of the restaurants are a hike for me, but worth it. Some amazing vegan eats i’ve discovered? Cauliflower curry and the spring rolls at the brand new Good Girl Dinette in Highland Park … and the heavenly spirulina pie at Stuff I Eat in Inglewood (not to mention their vegan soul food plate). I never thought a healthy GREEN (as in, not artificially colored, but green from algae) could be so out of this world. As for Fatty’s, my partner and i go kind of often, because we live in the area, and while i like it there, it’s often hit or miss. We’ve never had enough room after dinner to go for the vegan fondue (it’s also 20 bucks)… so it remains on the list of future goals… 🙂

  • I have to disagree. I went a few weeks ago after reading your post & even ordered some of the things you blogged about. It was very disappointing to say the least. I ordered the “vegan pizza” that tasted like a tostada. It definitely needed a little kick because it was too bland, not to mention it was very burned. We also ordered the Oils sampling and while we liked the warm bread we would have preferred some vinaigrette’s instead of the oils. It was too pricey for the bland & burned food we received.
