vegan pizza of fairfax
17March 28th, 2008damiano mr. pizza, LA restaurants, pizzabeing a vegan, it’s pretty hard to find a safe pizza in los angeles….or should i say, it’s easy to find vegan pizza that merely omits the cheese, but rarely do i come across a restaurant that serves a standard pizza with a non-dairy cheese substitute. luckily, damiano mr. pizza pizza on fairfax has survived as the bastion of vegan(pizza)ism in los angeles—it’s pretty easy to grab an enormous, fresh, tasty pizza there…when all else fails.
the downside? well, the pizza pictured above cost $36 before tip. seriously. an extra large w/ vegan cheese, mushrooms, tomatoes, and chopped garlic will completely break your bank. but i guess it’s worth it. just try not to think about the fact that a beautiful cheese and mushroom pan pizza from pizza hut would only cost you $14.24.in mr. pizza pizza’s defense, though, the food is damn good.
if you do decide to give this place a try, i highly suggest you call ahead for carry-out. i’ve eaten at the restaurant, i’ve had pizzas delivered. and take it from me, unless you are picking up or have tons of free time, don’t bother. i remember sitting in the dank shit hole pictured below, waiting hours (seriously, hours) for my order to be taken and finally arrive, as throngs of pizza-savvy locals strolled in to pick up stacks of fresh-from-the-oven pies. similarly, when calling in a local delivery, the estimated time of arrival was literally somewhere between 1 and 3 hours. suffice to say, i’ve learned the hard way, but i will NEVER EVER eat in or get delivery from mr. pizza pizza again.
however, if you don’t mind breakin bread on a pizza that costs a fortune, and you like to eat in the comfort of your own home, damiano mr. pizza pizza is a great place for a los angeles vegan to get a pizza fix. it’s almost like being a vegetarian again…sans the cruelty. 🙂

Thanks for the review. I’d been meaning to try this place and now I know the rules of the game. 🙂

Damianos is the most disgusting dirty shit pit in LA. I stopped eating there a long time ago when my sensibilities couldn’t deal with vermin droppings and roaches when you turn the lights on. I hate to give a place a shitty review, but you now have been warned. I see they got a B now instead of the D from a couple of years ago. Yuck, just f’n yuck. Do yourself a favor and make your own. Go easy on the Follow your heart cheese. It’s better with just a little.

Unless Damiano’s switched recently, their “vegan” cheese is NOT vegan. I asked a few months ago. It has casin in it. So sad.

I see this post is a few years old but…
I have ordered from Damiano’s off and on (more off due to price and lengthy delivery time)… It would be a treat to order… So after years of ordering delivery, I decided to do a pick-up… I had been inside before just grabbing a slice and thought what a shithole… So as I’m standing there waiting to pay or whathaveyou, I observe the pizza maker pick up RAW shrimp with his BARE hands, place it in a pan or something to cook it and then proceed to touch veggies from the cold line to continue on with another pizza… I said something to him along the lines of “you just handled raw shellfish and you’re not even going to wash your hands??” Never mind maybe using a fucking utensil… I became engaged in a conversation with the manager type person, who apologized profusely and made him throw away the pizza he had been handling after the shrimp… I am not a veggie/vegan, but was so utterly grossed out by what I had witnessed when only there for a short time, my mind went off about what all goes on back there when no one is watching… I still don’t understand why CA doesn’t make people wear gloves… I am almost positive that this fellow does NOT wash his hands after using the bathroom either… I am issuing this as a warning to you and your vegan friends that Damiano’s is not only gross but they probably 100% touch raw animal products or meat before they touch your veggies and dough… Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but this was about 2 years ago and I have not eaten anything from there since and told the manager that I would probably never order from them again upon my departure with my overpriced but good pizza that I couldn’t eat without seeing that man with a handful of raw shrimp and then rubbing it all over the other ingredients… ewww…
ps… I was directed to your blog via la.eater.com in a post about Doomie’s opening in Hollywood…

I am the one who got Damiano’s to carry the vegan cheese. They, from the very beginning had only used one cheese which was the Follow Your Heart which has always been vegan. They, I believe, have tried out Teese at some point briefly but that is vegan as well. They may start to carry the Cheddar Daiya cheese along with the Mozzarella FYH cheese but at this time they only have the FYH cheese. They have never carried any other veg cheese. I know this as a fact.
