remember that vegan philly cheesesteak special at m cafe that i blogged about recently? well, the restaurant has decided to make it a “fall special,” which means right now it’s available all the time! i took the sandwich for a spin on friday (minus the bell peppers, because i hate them), and it was all kinds of amazing.

philly cheesesteak: thinly-sliced seitan, peppers, mushrooms, and onions then smothered melted “cheese sauce”. $9.95

good god, this is the best philly cheesesteak i’ve ever eaten…

the thing was stacked with super thinly sliced seitan, grilled onions, and shiitake mushrooms all slathered in rich and creamy nut-yeasty cheese sauce. i am a huge m cafe fan in general, and i think this is their best menu item yet. go try it while it’s around!

seriously, i think this could be the best vegan sandwich in all of LA.

  • How does this compare to the Tony’s DA Philly Cheesesteak?

    James

  • i actually had tony’s the other day (still need to blog it!), and it was good, but i prefer m cafe’s. they use homemade cheese sauce and the seitan is above and beyond. tony’s uses chunks of celebration roast, but the m cafe stuff is thinly sliced.

  • my husband is from philly (and he doesn’t like bell peppers either) and he’s a vegetarian. must. get!

  • Thanks QuarryGirl for posting the ingredients to Tony’s philly cheesesteak! Now I know which item to go shopping for!

  • Dang, that looks like a serious sandwich. I don’t get down to Melrose very often but M Cafe will be on my mind if I do.

  • Well, we disagree on this one. I had it yesterday. Meh. It probably didn’t help that it had cold spots inside but it was still just ok. I thought it was kinda dry. Lots of bread to choke down. I’ll be sticking with the club or burger.

(Maybe the problem was that I had it with bell peppers.)

  • Went there last night specifically for this sandwhich and it had been taken off the menu! Looks like that permanate fall fixture statement should be updated.

  • We went there last night and saw that it was not on the menu, but I asked for it and they said it’s available. The seitan was definitely good. The “cheese” sauce was, in our opinion, not a cheese sauce at all. It was actually a gravy, which was good…just not what we expected. Maybe they gave us the wrong sauce? Also, for the price, it should come with a side.

  • Looks great
