an old school diner that’s been around for almost a century, serves breakfast all day, and has loads of vegan options? sounds to good to be true! well believe me folks, it does exist…it’s called st. francis fountain, and it’s located in san francisco’s mission district.

we schlepped our bags to st francis straight from the airport when we visited SF a few weeks ago. our flight got in at around 9am, and we were ravenous. i was immediately taken aback by how crowded it was for a weekday morning! almost all the stools at the bar were taken, and the booths along the wall were full. we were lucky enough to get the last seat in the house, a small two top tucked away in the corner under a window. i loved the vibe of the place right away, decorated very 50s style with a friendly staff.

the menu was huge with lots of hearty vegan options. it’s completely different and much more vegan-friendly than the one posted on their website, so don’t even bother looking there. scrambles, pancakes, milkshakes—all available animal-free.

vegan thing: breakfast potatoes covered in vegan cheese, guacamole and salsa. $7.50

my husband ordered the “vegan thing”, a plate of potatoes smothered in vegan cheese, guac and salsa. it came in two sizes, and he got the large for $7.50. dude, it was HUGE! a seriously great value. i really wish i would have ordered this, but it’s okay because i sure helped eat it. the vegan cheese was mozzarella style follow your heart, and it was melted just perfectly. love.

vegan rancheros: spicy scrambled tofu served with black beans, corn tortillas and fresh salsa. (normallly comes with vegan cheese) $8.25

i went with the vegan rancheros, a plate of scrambled tofu served with black beans, corn tortillas and fresh salsa. it normally comes with vegan cheese, but i left that off and didn’t even miss it. the best part of this plate was the scramble—it was tomatoey with big chunks of soft green chilies. so spicy!

i have been told by tara that the vegan espresso milkshakes at st francis fountain are the best shakes on earth…so i’m pretty sad i didn’t get one. i was really stuffed at the time, but now i wish i would have just powered through.

finding an awesome and filling vegan breakfast at a restaurant can be challenging, especially during the week. just know that if you’re ever in SF, st. francis fountain has you covered!

  • Next time I’m in SF I hope to be blessed at the St. Francis Fountain. looks delicious.

  • Every time we go, we always mean to eat here and it just doesn’t end up happening.

  • St Francis fountain is pretty great! I’ve heard Sun Rise down the street has several vegan options as well with a Latin spin. I’ve been meaning to get over there and try em out.

  • Sounds like vegan/vegetarian heaven.

  • went there the morning after sea of dreams on new year’s day. as an FYI there’s a great bar right across the street that has EPIC bloody mary’s. which allowed us to get sufficiently smashed while waiting for our table… 45 minutes later the vegan thing did it’s thing perfectly 😉

^ Re this bit, I think dessert regret is never worth it, just order it no matter what. (Said the girl who desperately needs to lose 15 lb hahaha:p)

But seriously, vegan espresso milkshake sounds marvelous and spectacular.
