vegan pizza at escape from new york in san francisco
3January 27th, 2011bay area, more restaurants (not LA), san franciscovegan pizza day is less than 2 days away! how are you going to celebrate it? if you are in san francisco, i can highly recommend the vegan pie at escape from new york.
the small chain has 6 locations in SF, and has recently started carrying daiya. we found them by accident when we were vacationing last month, and the haight restaurant was just steps away from our hotel. the pizzeria is very new yorky-themed, from the name of the business, to the statue of liberty logo, to the massive thin ny-style pies and pizza by the slice.
unfortunately, escape from new york doesn’t offer any vegan pizza by the slice…so we had to grab an entire pie to take back to our hotel room. damn!
we wanted to spring for a large (or even an extra large) so we could have huge bendable slices to eat, but those pizzas were just way too big and way too expensive. we settled on a medium (the smallest size available), which comes with 8 slices and was a pricey $23.38 by the time we added toppings.
i’m happy to report that the pizza was fantastic, albeit costly. the crust was thin and crisp with the perfect amount of chew, the daiya was melty and stretch-ilicious, and the toppings were fresh and plentiful.
oh man, i sure do love a slightly crispy pizza crust:
if i lived in SF, i know i’d be hitting up escape from new york regularly. unfortunately they charge the unspoken vegan tax (you know, the extra $ you have to pay for vegan cheese that makes the meal ridiculously expensive), but other than that i’m a big fan. the pizza is delicious, and this really feels like a “normal” pizzeria. i love that vegans can now eat at places like this. yay 2011!
now go celebrate vegan pizza day!
check out escape from new york’s website for locations and hours.

That sounds yummy (poor you, having to buy a whole pizza instead of a slice 🙂
I’ll be in Vegas on Saturday, so I plan on heading over to the Pizza Place at the Wynn.

it’s worth just ordering their vegan pizza by the slice. their potato pesto used to be vegan and is hands down the best vegan pizza i’ve ever had. it probably still is vegan, i just haven’t been there in years.
