Have not tried vegan Ethiopian dishes yet, second photo looks good!!

  • Man, $7 worth of Ethiopian food is enough to get me full. That stuff is filling.

  • I love Surly Goat! I’m going there for sure on NYE. Thanks for the post. QG!!!!!!

  • Never again will I eat at Rahel Ethiopian. I love Ethiopian food and was a long-time fan of Rahel Ethiopian until my girlfriend and I (also a woman) had a meal there about three months ago that left us with the distinct feeling that there were some homophobic overtones in the service (or lack thereof) that we received throughout our meal. We arrived for dinner on a Friday night with only two other parties eating in the restaurant at the same time. Service moved along quite well for those two tables throughout the entire evening, despite the fact that the table next to us has a member who was yelling homophobic and misogynistic rants at the top of his lungs for 30 minutes until he finally left. One of his comments included something about a ” lesbianbutch man-hating whore”. It took a full 15 minutes of waiting after we were seated in this nearly empty restaurant to have our orders taken while we had to listen to the rants of the guy next to us. After we placed our order it took an extremely long time for our first course to arrive and our second course or check would not have arrived at all had I not approached the wait staff myself after having waited for 45 minutes after we finished eating. The waitress (and perhaps owner, I’m not sure)told me that I had no idea what I was talking about when I said that I had been waiting for 45 minutes with no service in a dead restaurant and then disputed the fact that we had ordered the special with the dessert. This back and forth went on for a full minute until she insisted upon asking another waitress in the restaurant who had taken our order to verify that we had indeed ordered the dessert and she very angrily told me to sit down at the table and she would bring it herself. After the dessert we had to go up to the counter again to pay after having waited another extended period during which time there was further dispute over the bill.
My girlfriend and I have never in our lives experienced such poor service, nor have we ever left a business feeling absolutely certain that a serious amount of homophobia was at play.
I recommend Nayala across the street for any GLBT patrons who want respectable service. Neither of us would ever go to Rahel again.

  • WOW. that is extremely fucked up. i don’t wanna support a place that treats customers that way. FAIL.

  • This is just ridiculous. Rahel’s doesn’t strike me as a homophobic restaurant at all.

And QG, you shouldn’t stop eating there or supporting this place on your blog because of 1 comment. For all we know, this rant could be from a competitor, ex employee, or someone who just has it out for Rahel.

I love Rahel’s, and the staff are always sweet and attentive.

  • For what it’s worth, I am not a competitor. I live like 5 blocks away from Rahel and eat in that block quite often. It was one of my favorite restaurants up until I got served with the worst service I have ever received. I have never complained about or to a restaurant before as I am extremely easy to please.
This was BAD service, to say the least.
