vegan bowlin’ at laughing planet
7July 25th, 2010more restaurants (not LA), portlandwe ate a lot of food on our recent trip to portland, and some of the best was the simple nutritious fare from laughing planet. the quick serve restaurant has a few locations around portland, and offers a very vegan-friendly menu of burritos, bowls, soups, and salads.
we love bowls, and there are not nearly enough of them in los angeles, so we decided to order 2. first up was the “steamed veggies, rice, and beans” bowl. pretty self-explanatory and very delicious, this thing came with a colorful mix of steamed vegetables atop a bed of pinto beans and brown rice. there wasn’t a lot to this dish, but it was perfectly executed—everything was fresh and tasted amazing. the best part of this meal though, is that it came with a fiery orange side of habenero salsa that was so hot, even i couldn’t handle it. i am fan of all things spicy, so i scoffed at the cashier when he warned me about the heat of the sauce. let’s just say i was put in my place and this stuff actually made me cry. no joke.
next up, we shared the cuban bowl: a dish of brown rice, black beans, plantains, and sweet potatoes. this was my favorite of the 2 bowls, because there really isn’t a better combo than black beans with plantains…they just taste so damn good together. the cuban bowl also came with a side of the dangerously spicy habanero sauce, and i was able to handle a few drops of it mixed in.
the atmosphere at laughing cafe is relaxed and funky, you can probably get an idea of the vibe by checking out their goofy website. 🙂 we absolutely loved it…and i know if i lived in portland, this would be a very regular haunt for cheap, healthy, tasty food.
check out laughing planet’s site for all their locations and hours!

It is interesting, I lived in Portland OR years ago and there were very few vegan options. Now, it seems like a vegan hot spot. I guess I left before I should have. 🙂

You tricked me with the title of this post. I thought you had discovered a vegan bowling alley–which would be my ultimate dream come true!!!
