it’s been 2 years since we first hit the spot in hermosa beach, and i have no idea why it took us so long to return.

the spot is LA’s oldest vegetarian restaurant and most of their menu can be made vegan. we were inspired to go back after reading this blog post about the spot’s healthy options, and lemme tell you, they did not disappoint.

a baked potato is a beautiful thing, and for some reason it’s really hard to find one on restaurant menus in los angeles. i mean seriously, these things are a standard at every pub and eatery in england—why are they so hard to find in LA?!

savory spud: our baked potatoes are stuffed with seasonal organic veggies & covered with our world famous savory sauce. (we got red sauce instead). $11.95

anyways, the spot does have a baked potato option, and it is indeed delicious. the “savory spud” as they call it, usually comes covered in the glorious white sauce that we blogged about last time…but on this visit we ordered our spuds with red sauce and gravy instead. while the savory sauce is nothing short of amazing, it is super heavy and oily, and we were in the mood for something light.

the spud with red sauce, pictured above, was very tasty. the fluffy potato came covered in steamed vegetables and smothered with a spicy salsa-like sauce. it was enormous, probably big enough for two people to share, but still a tad unreasonably priced at almost $12.

we also got one with mushroom gravy, which was quite nice as well…

the spot’s spud seriously makes for the perfect healthy meal that you won’t leave you feeling lethargic and bloated afterwards. if only they’d lower their prices a little bit. in fact, that was one of our complaints about the spot two years ago, and since then the prices have gone up! oh well.

if you haven’t hit up the spot, you really need to get over there ASAP. show LA’s oldest meat-free restaurant some support already! jeez.

  • $12 for a potato and some fucking vegetables? That’s nuts. Are they serious??

  • @Spoon There might be a way to lower the cost of this by ordering a side of a baked potato and a side of the gravy or red sauce. I think we’re paying the $ for the expensive savory sauce. I’ll try to double hack it next time or email the owner and see if she can hook it up. At the end of the day, though, I’ll pay a few $ 2 to 4 over regular price to not be poisoned when I’m eating out.

  • Looks good!!
I’ve decided to start eating healthier. My new resolution, actually. Just to have more energy and feel better.

  • Yes, they do look like they over charge for their food. You could easily make that bake potato dishe at home. Here’s the recipe for their savory sauce and I bet you could cut back on the oil:

  • I’ve never been to the Spot, but my wife came back from CA once raving about the tofu savory sauce – and that recipe that Fat Fudge posts is ridiculously good. We’ve made it a *ton* of times. I’m pondering using it on a pizza right now.
