July 12th, 2011quarrygirllondon, more restaurants (not LA)

in honor of fat gay vegan’s announcement about a soon-to-be entirely vegan multi-vendor marketplace in london, today we’ve decided to feature one of our favorite restaurants in the city: inspiral lounge.

we’ve been singing inspiral’s praises for ages, and have never had a bad experience there (other than the time i had a massive dessert craving and they were out of their amazing tiramisu!). the almost entirely vegan cafe (they have dairy milk on hand for coffee and tea) is just a short walk from the camden tube station and has a stunning view the canal and market. prices are low and the food is good—they’ve got ready to go meals, a deli counter, baked goods, and ice cream all for the taking.

we’ve blogged about their set meals before which come with an entree and a side (i highly recommend the tofu tarragon parcel!), but on our latest visit we went with the buffet style option. we each got a “regular bowl” for £5.95 and had it filled with to the brim with wholesome selections.

the menu at inspiral is constantly rotating, but when we were last there it was all about brown rice, leafy greens, baked potatoes, bean salad, curried dal, and roasted parsnips. there were also a variety of cold salads and mixed vegetables to choose from…

we got a little bit of everything, and it was all fantastic. fresh vegetables, aromatic curries, and beans 3 times the normal size! another thing i love about inspiral is that they provide pots of nutritional yeast and kale chips to sprinkle on your meal. after all, everything tastes better with a little nooch.

inside, the lounge has a kinda hippy new-age vibe. you order at the counter and there’s plenty of seating, but it can get quite crowded during peak hours…here’s what it looked like at noon on a weekday:

according to inspiral’s website, they’ve also recently started serving breakfast! hell yes, a full english vegan breakfast in london is very hard to find, and inspiral now offers a healthy version of a traditional fry up. their “bake up” includes a plate of scrambled tofu, homemade veggie sausage, tomato, mushrooms, hash browns, tempeh bacon, and homemade mixed beans and toast. aaaaaaah, i can’t wait to go back!

At £450 a month they will make more from 7 stalls than they ever were from the cafe. Go figure.

ps: Please excuse my sceptical outlook on this. It’s just way over priced for a 5×3 stall.
