cafe gratitude opens in LA today, and the menu rules
28March 2nd, 2011cafe gratitude, LA restaurantslos angeles vegans, rejoice! cafe gratitude is opening today in larchmont village!
the vegetarian restaurant chain (almost entirely vegan, but some menu items contain honey), is already a huge hit in the bay area and we are so happy they’ve decided to set up shop in LA. and in even better news, they’ll be serving some of the menu items from their sister restaurant gracias madre (one of our favorite places EVER)!
lilliam over at mondette stopped by the new cafe gratitude location and swiped a copy of the insane-looking menu. check it out:
pretty epic, right? raw food, cooked food, mexican food, bowls, those cheesy potatoes….not to mention beer and wine?! i may soon have a new favorite restaurant. check it out TODAY.

The I Am Grateful bowl is free – that should make the people complaining about the vegan tax happy!

I am undewhelmed. Since, as a vegan, I don’t eat honey, am I supposed to guess which dishes aren’t vegan? Menu fail.

Maybe I am too cynical, but the whole “I am…” with various adjectives is really embarrassing for me. And looking at Lynn’s blog (link above) and seeing a plate that says “what are you grateful for?” and little piece of paper that says “you are a gift” is kind of a turn off for me. Just kinda plays into the vegan stereotype a bit too much for me.
But I’m not above good food and I will try this place.

Paul, I’m with you. This hippie claptrap is exactly what gives vegans a bad name. Anyways, this place is part of an abusive cult from San Francisco. Google it. You’ll see.

Thanks for the that lead, Stan. I lost a friend to the Landmark forum years ago. It’s also in LA and is just a repackaged version of the EST cult from the 1970s. I will NOT be giving then a dime, even indirectly.

naming “I am…” is soooo dumb.
Their raw dishes are AWFUL in the bay, glad to see they have some cooked options that are from gracias madre which are fantastic -

I’m pretty much the antithesis of a hippie, I don’t give a crap about the hippie-dippy quotes on the plates and on the bill.
What I care about is the food, and it’s fucking amazing. My girl and I had dinner there last night – I had tacos and she had the polenta – and it was *incredible*.
And, the service was perfect! Great experience all around. Especially impressive considering this was the first night they were open.

UGH….I’ve eaten at Café Gratitude in SF before and forgot about the question of the day. I was caught off guard when one of the servers asked me if I’d like to hear what the question of the day was. “What are you grateful for?” CHEEESY HIPPIE DIPPY BS! I’m vegan, but I could do without having to tell my server what the heck I’m grateful for. Other than the overall theme of the restaurant, I really enjoy their hot entrees and milkshakes. They need to open a Gracias Madre here in LA. That is what I’m waiting for!

The menu page that lynn @ the actor’s diet posted, says 100% vegan on the bottom of the page. As Moore Rhys pointed out, I guess we get to guess which items contain honey or decide to trust the staff in knowing the correct answers.
It’s a shame they can’t tell the truth and refer to themselves as being vegetarian and mark the items on the menu that are vegan.
Thank you qg for referring to them as a ‘vegetarian restaurant chain” as that is what they are.
Hey, Cafe Gratitude – I AM VEGAN. YOU ARE NOT.

I saw something on the menu with honey last night…I can’t remember what it was, but it’s def on their menu in at least one instance.

Yeah, I was caught off guard with questions like that in SF.
Last night, our server said “The question of the day is ‘Why do you like new beginnings?” and she invited me and my gf to discuss with each other…we didn’t have to answer to the server, thankfully 🙂

You people are reading into this too much! STOP THE INTENSITY! A new Vegan restaurant opening, should not be this dramatic. I went to Cafe Gratitude two days in a row, and I’m going again tonight for their grand opening party. The food is delicious and the service is awesome. That is all that matters. We don’t have that many Vegan restaurants in the area so why in the f^ck are you complaining, whining, and bad mouthing? I implore each and every one of you who had something negative to say, to walk up to the owners tonight and let them know face to face how you feel… and of course you wont because you’re pussies that hide behind your IP address

I was there this weekend and I saw honey listed on one dish – actually a beverage, the I Am Cozy Tea. It says clearly on the menu it can be served without honey. As a vegan, I don’t eat honey, but I’m not going to get my panties in a wad about an otherwise terrific restaurant that serves high quality raw and cooked organic vegan cuisine, and makes an effort to feed those who would be otherwise unable to afford such cuisine.
And so what if the names are a little hippie – is that the worst stereotype of vegans to perpetuate? I think calling a dish something other than the word we use for animal products is actually a pretty decent concept.
As a first weekend for a restaurant, everything ran incredibly smoothly and we received our food quickly and exactly as order (e.g. we ordered the mole sauce on the side). Better than some places that have been around for a while. I will definitely return. Thanks for letting us know about the opening, QG.

I am Annoyed and Disappointed
Café Gratitude espouses a raw food diet and a philosophy of self-transformation. But some current and former employees say it’s left a bad taste in their mouths.
