this post is dedicated to natalie portman, who lives in los angeles and recently gave up on veganism because she couldn’t find any vegan cookies.

i have put away truckloads of vegan cookies in my time (believe me!), but now that i’ve discovered ye olde tyme bake shoppe, i can say that i’ve found my favorite.

vegan chocolate chip cookies from ye olde tyme bake shoppe

the small los angeles based operation sells their treats both online and at some restaurants in the san fernando valley. whether you wanna place a mail order or drive to the 818, whatever you need to do to get your hands on these cookies, it’ll be worth it…

ye olde tyme bake shoppe sent me a package of cookies to sample, and i was officially hooked after one bite. chocolate chip cookies can be hit or miss, and i’m very particular. the moment they’re too hard or crispy, i’m over it. cookies should be soft and moist, with a buttery taste and a fluffy texture. well i’m happy to report that ye old tyme bake shoppe’s cookies were all of these things, even after being sent by mail. it’s a good time to be a vegan, because baked goods have been NAILED. they’re perfect. you really don’t need eggs or milk to have a rich and decadent dessert. (take note, natty!)

i ate two cookies immediately and set aside the rest for a later time. let’s just say, they didn’t last 24 hours. not even close. these cookies are so good, they’re dangerous!

don’t take my word for it, find out for yourself. currently, ye olde tyme’s treats are available at lotus vegan and green carrot coffee house. you can also order online via artfire or etsy. oh, and they don’t JUST make cookies…ye olde tyme also sells a variety of vegan baked goods and breads, as well as homemade gourmet sauces. stock up.

  • I wouldn’t even consider ordering these cookies since they aren’t gluten-free, whereas ALL of Brody’s Bakery’s baked goods are BOTH vegan AND gluten-free! BUT I loved the post because of the DEDICATION! I had already lost tons of respect, of course, for that particular starlet even BEFORE her ridiculous comment about not being able to find vegan cookies in L.A., but AFTER the comment???!!! Let me just say, Ah HA HA HA HA HA HA!

  • Oh mama! I’m gonna have to make a little detour to check this place out! YUM!!

I had some excellent Chocolate Chip Cookies at The Red Velvet Cafe in Las Vegas, too. And my mother has modified her family recipe to be vegan (just for me!!) – I’ve even taught her to read labels on the chocolate chips, too. 😉

  • Ugh, she’s so lame. I’m poor and I don’t have a car (or personal chef, or team of paid handlers, or more money than god) but if I want a vegan cookie, I damn well find one. Excuses, excuses!

  • Gauri Radha गौरी राधा

Glad to know about them, thanks for the links and info QG.
    Those vegan cookies look delicious!

  • Haven’t heard of these, thanks!

Mrs. Winston’s also has AMAZING vegan chocolate chip and peanut butter cookies from a small local bakery called Not Your Uncle Bob’s Bakery – seriously they are the BEST! The cashier even gave me a personal money back guarantee, ha! 🙂

  • I’m glad you’ve posted a few things about Natalie Portman….when I read she gave up being vegan for COOKIES…I’m was like “are you fucking serious!?!?” …if there’s any place where vegan junk food is available, it’s LOS ANGELES.

  • Wow, those cookies look fantastic! Do you happen to know what kind of chocolate they use? I ask because I’ve recently learned that not all chocolate — even vegan chocolate — is actually “cruelty free”: a lot of cocoa sourced from Africa comes from plantations that use child labor. It’s an issue I wish more vegans were talking about, and it’s made me do a bit of homework before I buy chocolate. Fortunately, volunteers with a nonprofit called Food Empowerment Project (F.E.P.) have been taking the time to contact companies directly and find out where their cocoa comes from. F.E.P. even has a list of recommended companies. People can learn more at http://www.foodispower.org/slavery_chocolate.htm

  • There is also Sweet Debbie’s bakery in Los Angeles ( I happen to be the founder) that sells all vegan baked goods, including chocolate chip cookies. http://www.sweetdebbiesorganiccupcakes.com

  • uncle eddies, michelle, liz lovelys, the list goes on and on and on and on. Portman must be blind or stupid

  • They best Vegan choc chip cookies can be found at Whole Foods in Venice in their cookie/pastry case. I don’t know if they bake them onsite or bring them in but it’s scary how good they are. Best I’ve had by far.

  • Natalie Portman got in a relationship with someone who I assume isn’t vegan or vegetarian. Someone usually caves.

  • Based on that photo and the review, I went to order some cookies from YOTBS last night. The Etsy site said they were available for delivery or pickup, but when I went to check out, the site automatically added shipping. I sent an E-mail asking about pickup (late at night), and within 1/2 hour, I had a return E-mail asking where I lived (Burbank). Upon my reply, I was given a coupon code so the shipping would be taken out, and the next day by 2:00 p.m., they were personally delivered at no charge (and they tasted better than they look.
    Service: A+
    Quality: A+
    Overall: A+
10/10…easily the best vegan cookies I’ve had, and better than any non-vegan cookies I can remember.

  • Love it, just ordered these so fast I incinerated my keyboard. My top vegan cookies in LA are the gluten-free Michelle’s Chokolada Chip (somehow better than the non-gluten free, no idea why) and the Veggie Grill’s chocolate chips, so if these are even better I’m going to have start buying bigger pants.

On the subject of absurdly good LA desserts, QG, have you ever ordered a cake from Jamaica’s Cakes? Shockingly good, not sure why more vegans don’t know about them. I always order their red velvet cake for meetings and omnivores go wild. Better than the award-winning Vegan Treats, IMHO, and a billion times better than BabyCakes or KindKreme.

  • Hmm. I have not seen Michelle’s Chokolada Chip at Ralphs or Trader Joe’s.

  • No, I haven’t seen them there either, but they have some at Whole Foods and all (including the gluten-free) at Mother’s in OC. They must be at Erewhon too, but I haven’t ever looked.

After I put up my original post I realized that I forgot the real hidden epic vegan dessert I’ve had in California: the brownies at Olive Oil in Imperial Beach. This place might as well be at the end of the world and doesn’t seem to be on the radar of most vegans, even in San Diego, but the brownies and the sandwiches are so addictive you’d swear they were packed with some sort of medical grade narcotics that washed up from across the border. One of my top picks down here so far … but I can’t wait to try Ye Olde.

  • Thanks for the info. I’ll pass on them, though, since WF and Erewhon are both Overpriceds. (Nevertheless, we still shop at WF 4-5 times a year, since they are the only place not too far away where I can get my VegLife vitamins and where we can get our holiday meals.)

  • Oh, and also, ever since QG let us all know about Brody’s Bakery, we order most of our baked goods from them (ALL of Brody’s baked goods are both vegan and gluten-free). I have also started buying Glutino’s lemon wafer cookies, which I think are delicious as well.

  • The cornbread might be better than the cookies. +++
