• love ‘n haight: your typical sandwich shop with a vegan twist

not every place we review serves the end-all be-all, best vegan food ever. sometimes it’s nice to walk into a “normal” establishment and get a decent cruelty-free meal at a low price.

vege peppersteak sandwich on a sourdough roll with pepperoncini < $6

such is the case with love ‘n haight in san francisco. the unassuming hole-in-the-wall sandwich shop goes out of their way to cater to herbivores, and the food is pretty damn good.

they have loads of mock meat options, and even bother to separate the vegan ones from the non-vegan ones on the menu. (not all faux meats are vegan, people! lots contain eggs or dairy.) they also take the time to point out which breads are vegan. god, i wish every place did this.

anyways…we wound up there on xmas day, after a horrible and measly dinner at cha-ya. we’d had a great experience at love ‘n haight in the past, and when we passed by on our way to toronado, we knew our fate was sealed—we HAD to splurge on a sandwich to share as a midnight snack.

we went with the “vege peppersteak” (pictured above), with added pepperoncinis and plenty of mustard. talk about hitting the spot. it wasn’t a sandwich i’d drive across town for, but it was satisfying and tasty…not to mention CHEAP at under 6 bucks! generous toppings, nice-ass quality bread, and fake meaty meats! i cannot complain.

inside, love ‘n haight is your typical deli. it’s got bright lights, a counter to order at, and sparse seating. the menu is hanging up on the wall, and vegan items are clearly marked. i really love this place, because as i said earlier, it just feels so…normal. average humans eat at crappy joints like this everyday. we vegans should be able to as well!

i love you, love ‘n haight. and i’ll be back for more massive cheap sandwiches before you know it.

Looks good for a quick lunch and such.

  • I ate there when I visited San Francisco a few months ago. I totally agree with the write-up. I got the vegan chicken and it was delicious! The only thing I could ask for is some Daiya (I know, I’m just so used to having it readily available!), but I just got some hummus on it instead and it was great! I definitely plan on going back the next time I’m in the area.

  • I’m spamming all the QG boards right now, so why not this one too – L’n’H makes an AWESOME vegan chickensteak sandwich, one that I ended up jonesing for so badly that I trudged two miles up the hill to get one after midnight. And it’s about half the price of anything at Ike’s (which is good, but the hype is a little relentless). And their fridge is like a kombucha distillery, really good selection.
