UPDATED 2/11: vegan valentine’s day in los angeles 2011

i am not a huge fan of valentine’s day (in fact, i think it’s kinda ridiculous), but that doesn’t mean i’m gonna miss the opportunity to eat lots of special holiday grub!
here’s a list of places around LA that are doing vegan valentine’s day menu, or offering seasonal items. the big day is just 2 weeks away, and i will keep updating this list as more info becomes available…so check back often!
updated 2/11: madeleine bistro (our favorite restaurant ever) is doing an insane tasting menu on the evening of monday the 14th, as well as specials all weekend leading up to it. they’ve just posted the menus for valentine’s day weekend which starts today. check it out, they look amazing. the hours on monday are from 5pm – 10pm, there are still spots open but you need reservations to get in, and you get an elaborate 7-course tasting menu for $125 per person. some of the dishes include a housemade pretzel bagel with nut cream cheese, fondue, white chocolate mousse, and more. for full valentine’s day menu and info, click here.
added 2/10: doomie’s home cookin’ is having a special valentine’s day dinner that’s reservation only. they haven’t worked it all out yet, but here’s the “probably stuff”: $50 per couple, prix fixe menu with 2 entree options, at least 5 courses, dessert included. Most likely fine dining Italian influenced. BYOB.
added 2/10: pizza fusion in hollywood is having tons of awesome vegan specials this valentine’s day! from garlic vegan cheese bread, to a love fest pizza, to heart shaped gluten-free ice cream sandwiches. check out the flyer:
updated 2/10: mooi! the echo park location has closed down, but stephen hauptfuhr of mooi is teaming up with raya belna of sweet raya cakes to prepare a special valentine’s day dinner on 2/14 in downtown LA. it’s $25 per person, or $40 per couple with RSVP! full info and menu are available here, and you can email stephen to make reservations. seating is limited!
added 2/10: babycakes vegan bakery is offering lots of goodies for valentine’s day, and today is the last day to get your order in! they’ll be selling both small and large gift baskets stuffed with vegan, gluten and soy free macaroons, mounds, heart shaped donuts, peppermint patties, cookies (both heart shaped and not) and brownies. to place your order, call 213.623.5555. they’ll also be having a make your own valentine party tomorrow…here’s the info on that:

added 2/7: desert rose in los feliz is having a vegan-friendly tasting menu all valentine’s day weekend and on the holiday itself for $49, with an optional $20 wine pairing. vegan items include watercress salad, pasta, and passion fruit ice cream. check out the full menu here.
added 2/6: native foods will be offering valentine’s day specials on febrary 12th, 13th, and 14th. this is your chance to eat chef tanya’s homemade tempeh scallopine, garlic mashed potatoes, russian velvet soup, and chocolate raspberry cupcakes! here’s a look at the flyer:
added 2/2: spork foods is holding some amazing aphrodisiac valentine’s day cooking classes on the 12th and 12th. the menu for these classes will be entirely gluten-free and will include a green salad with fig champagne vinaigrette, almond crusted tofu with a roasted garlic and fennel puree, creamy carrot ginger soup with spicy chili oil, and chocolate dipped strawberries with a vanilla bean cream. i recently took one of the spork cooking classes and had the best time ever! i’d HIGHLY recommend them. (stay tuned for my review on their classes!)
sunpower natural cafe has a choice of either a raw or cooked four course menu which includes a sensual elixir for $95 per couple. they’ve got loads of tasty things in store including cashew chez fondue, baby biscuits and portobello gravy, and cookie dough pie. check out all the info on their website.
tony’s darts away will be hosting the second annual compassion over killing valentine’s day party on febraury 14th from 6:30-9:30pm. i can’t think of anything more awesome than drinking local craft beer with fellow animal rights folks and enjoying some high-quality vegan sausages!
updated 2/10: shojin will be doing a valentine’s day tasting menu, and they’ve just posted it online. it looks pretty epic, and includes a savory pot pie with pink velvet sauce. it will be available 2/12 – 2/14, so check out their site for times and menu.
updated 2/6: real food daily will be having a special valentine’s day evening course from 5-10pm. the menu is four courses for $65 per person. menu possibilities include vegan fondue, spicy seitan, and devils food cake. get a look at it here.
m cafe de chaya is getting into the v-day spirit with heart shaped desserts available from 2/7 through 2/14. hit them up for a heart-shaped sacher torte, heart-shaped petit fours, heart-shaped linzer cookies and heart-shaped strawberry shortcake. yum.
added 2/10: fresheast, our new favorite find in west hollywood, will be offering a vegan rose petal sorbet for valentine’s day. get over there and try it…and eat some of their awesome asian food while you’re there.
clara’s cakes will be having a bake sale at locali on february 13th from 11am-3pm. 13 year old clara polito is still trying to raise money for a trip to NYC, and this bake sale is gonna help her get there. be sure to go and load up on valentine’s day treats for your sweet. special v-day cupcakes will include caliente chocolate, vanilla raspberry, chocolate raspberry, neapolitan, and red velvet. see you there!

Yup, same here. I don’t celebrate Super Bowl and I don’t celebrate Valentine’s. Valentine’s is generally a drag for those who never have Valentines.

Just to clarify, I agree with you guys that it’s a totally ridiculous holiday (like most holidays.) I’m just one of those idiots who will take any reason to celebrate and have some vegan chocolate!! 😀

We did the special meal at real food daily this last thanksgiving. I think we might have to try something different for valentines.
I’m leaning towards shojin most likely. Madeleine bistro seems so good but $125 per person is pretty steep.
