must try: fry’s vegan meats at figueroa produce
16January 12th, 2011figueroa produce, LA restaurants, products, storesif you aren’t already hip to figueroa produce in highland park, you need to get over there. the neighborhood grocery store is super vegan-friendly and has more cutting edge products than anywhere else in los angeles.
when i popped by over the weekend for one of the epic deli sandwiches, they were handing out samples of vegan meat by a company called fry’s that totally blew my mind…
fry’s vegetarian is an absolutely revolutionary product, and as far as i know it isn’t available anywhere else in LA. figueroa produce carries loads of their frozen items including traditional burgers, chicken-style nuggets, hot dogs, beef-style strips, and chicken-fried looking thingys called golden crumbled schnitzels. on saturday, i tried samples of the nuggets, beef style strips, and hot dogs. all of them were incredible! maybe it’s because this is new to me, but right now i’d say that this is the best vegan meat i’ve tried in LA. i stocked up on boxes of this stuff, and you guys should too. SERIOUSLY, it’s a million times better than the other fake meat brands you can get at the “normal” supermarkets…i won’t name any names.
also, do yourself a favor and follow figueroa produce on twitter. for the next week (maybe longer) they are giving away a FREE deli sandwich EVERYDAY! i actually won it yesterday, and i can’t wait to collect. in addition to having the best products, figueroa produce is also the only place in town that has authentic vegan deli sandwiches. i’m talking faux meat and cheese sliced from a big block right in front of you.
what are you waiting for?

That stuff is nasty!!! I bought it a year ago and had no choice but to throw it in trash. I don’t mind vegan meats texture in products like gluten but when it start to taste like the really thing, It’s disgusting.

it was the fish and Beef strips. I don’t know what else they make but after I tried these two, it really turned me off to try their other products.

We have Frys in loads of places in UK, and have for years. (I particularly like the schnitzels)
UK & US Vegans need to find a way to join forces – you guys have all the stuff we don’t and vice versa. We don’t have daiya cheese 🙁 And I want Vegan Pizza!!! (no cafes/delis make vegan pizza here)

I think we may have been there at the same time quarrygirl! Were you there with a tall bearded gentleman? Anyways, I tried the vegan meats with my girlfriend after purchasing some sandwiches and we also both agree that it is some of the best tasting vegan meats we have ever had!

Damnit!! I was just there a few days ago. I guess I know I have an excuse to go back and become larger 😛

“but when it start to taste like the really thing, It’s disgusting.”
To each his own. The realler (that’s not a word, is it?), the better.
I guess I can understand how there can be vegetarians who aren’t down with the idea of simulating meat, but if you’re going to be like that, why bother with ANY fake meats? Why still go for the stuff that’s “close but no cigar”? That I don’t understand. Just be a “food of the earth” unprocessed fruits and veggies type.

Just a little point, Frys don’t do fish style products at all so not sure products Nabil tried out?

Gregalor I don’t think you understand anything!I will not waste time on you.

They did. I never forget something I ate that made me puke. I just check their site and they don’t have it anymore. As I have said, It was while ago, maybe they don’t make them anymore. EVEN BETTER.

Sorry Nabil, but I’ve eaten Frys since they came out years ago, and they have never done fish products at all. We have the full range in Europe too, always have had. Maybe it was a chikn one and you mistook it?

HI All, first thanks for the article, I think it was very well written, and we are very happy to have enetered the USA!
1. Fry’s has been around since 1991, but only just entered the USA!
2. We have never made a Fish, but for whats its worth, we are very close to one that is stunning!
Thanks for the support, and we are investing a lot of money into the USA market, and we hope to have more and more products available to everyone in the USA.
Keep well,
Shaun Richardson
