i have eaten my way through most of portland oregon, and one of my favorite restaurants there would have to be vita cafe.

i have been to vita cafe twice (both times for breakfast), and after my first visit, my expectations were VERY high. i gotta say though, vita cafe delivered and their food was just as exceptional in round 2. yep, best breakfast ever…again!

the vita: veggies, red onion, garlic and spinach. $8

on our most recent trip to portland, vita cafe is the first place we went after we landed. we were super hungry from the flight and looking for an a+ meal. first up, we split the vita scramble: a mix of tofu, vegetables, red onion, garlic and spinach. it came with an english muffin, and some of the best breakfast potatoes known to man.

crisp on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and perfectly seasoned…these potatoes were the bomb! the scramble was top notch as well, very fresh with delicious tofu.

pdx breakfast: organic tempeh, brown rice and toast. $5

we also shared the pdx breakfast: a simple meal of tempeh, brown rice, and toast. i ordered it with a corn muffin which was super tasty. this is a good dish if you are looking for something on the lighter side and don’t want to go all crazy with decadent fried sandwiches or biscuits and gravy.

biscuits and gravy: almond gravy over homemade biscuits. $3

we did want to go a little crazy though, so we ordered a small side of biscuits and gravy, which was just 3 bucks! the gravy at vita cafe is some of the best i’ve ever tasted in my life, and biscuits are majorly soft and fluffy. there could seriously be an entire blog dedicated JUST to finding the best biscuits and gravy in portland…and i know these would be a top contender.

vita cafe remains my favorite breakfast in portland, and definitely one of my favorite places i’ve ever been. the restaurant isn’t all vegan, but anything on the menu can be veganized…so do it to it!

  • If you go there for any meal besides breakfast, try their tempeh chicken-fried steak. It is AMAZING!

  • I loved Vita Cafe! I ate the best tofu scramble there. I wish I could have tried more. The biscuits and gravy look toooo good.

  • Right next door to Vita Cafe (next door to the vegan belt shop) is a little bakery that sells all vegan items. We stopped in there on our recent trip because their outside sign said they had vegan items (turns out it was all vegan), and I had this amaaaaaaaaaazing sticky bun. Imagine a fluffy almost cakey bun, loaded with pecans and smothered in a toffee syrup. My wife had a cinnamon bun, which was much like my sticky bun, sans nuts and syrup (it had frosting instead).

  • You must order the reuben – with “turkey” (seitan) and ask for vegan cheese. You will experience extreme deliciousness. Don’t forget your $4 pint!
