a warning to all my los angeles readers, before you get your hopes up, lula’s sweet apothecary is located in new york. sad but true…

lula’s is like a modern version of those romantic 1950’s ice cream parlours you grew up hearing about—it’s got a huge menu of various frozen treats, bar stools lining a counter, and friendly staff members who greet you with a smile. the big difference with lula’s is the whole place is 100% VEGAN. that’s right…the floats, shakes, malts, cones, sundaes, and banana splits are all entirely animal-free. woooooo!

brownie sundae: 2 scoops or soft serve + 1 sauce + 1 topping. topped with whipped cream and a cherry. $8.50

my first trip to lula’s in manhattan was in december on the coldest day of 2009. even in that ridiculous weather, a huge brownie sundae smothered in hot fudge and cookie crumbles went down extremely well. for my two ice cream flavors i chose the soft serve “cake batter” and the hand-packed “mint chip,” both of which were exquisite.

when i asked the girl behind the counter what cake batter would taste like, she said casually, “oh it’s like when you are making a cake and then you lick the batter off the mixer…”. granted, i had no idea what to expect after that explanation, but she was right on the money. i haven’t made a cake like that in years, and it’s a taste i would have forgotten entirely, but lula’s really nailed the flavor of old school boxed cake batter. it was like being 8 years old all over again with a box of betty crocker.

everything from the cherry on top to the moist fudgey brownie on bottom, was absolutely perfect. if you are vegan and you like desserts, you will highly appreciate lula’s sweet apothecary.

nothing tasted “dairy-free” at all, this was just seriously some of the best fucking ice cream i’ve ever had in my entire life! and the menu is so massive…i may have to move to new york just so i can make my way through it. wow, so good. vegan bakeries are cool, but i’d like to see a lot more vegan ice cream parlours.

hello! los angeles, you are failing! it is always hot here….and it is always cold in nyc. why do they have such a bad-ass ice cream place and we don’t? sad. sad. sad.

  • i am going to call my best pal in brooklyn and tell her to expect me there in about ~9 hours. I WANT A SUNDAE (sunday)

  • Me too! I am such an ice-cream fan. Why is this not available in Los Angeles. Anyway, thanks for the photo, looks amazing.

  • You didn’t remember what cake batter tastes like? :O Well, that’s okay, I never got the appeal of cake batter / cookie dough. Always preferred the final products.

  • I wish I had gone there while in NYC, but didn’t have time. Definitely on my list for my next visit – looks amazing!! Thanks!

  • I can’t believe I lived down the street for 3 years and never went. WHAT A WASTE!!! Well…I wasn’t vegan yet, so ok. But I have to go next time I’m in NYC.

  • That sounds/looks sooooooo goooooood!!!!!!

  • I heard a rumor that Wheeler’s Ice Cream was going to make its way to Los Angeles…

  • I love Lula’s!! I’m tempted to take a trip to the city just for some of the ice cream goodness!

  • So glad you made it to my favorite spot in the city. XO Lula’s!

  • Yeah, ya’ll west coasters DEFINITELY need to check out Lula’s when you’re over here. It’s mind-blowingly awesome. From their most recent Facebook update—Flavors: RumRaisin, PBFudge, Lemon, CaramelPopcorn, MintFudge, Ginger, Coffee, VanillaAlmond,ChocFudgeSwirl, CookiesNCream, CoconutFudge.
They even make their own peanut butter cups.

  • Hey, QG, it’s not always cold in NYC! come sometime in August and you’ll be beggin’ for Lula’s even more. Nice review, you hit the nail on the head.

  • Is is INSANE that this place exists in NYC where its freezing 1/3 of the year, but meanwhile, we sunshine overloaded californians don’t have a decent ice cream parlor!! (aside from scoops which is great but is gelato, not entirely vegan, and has no sundaes)

  • Man, oh, man that sundae looks good! I wonder where they got that whipped cream. It looks so much like dairy whipped cream! Why did I ever leave New York? Who knew it would become the vegan epicenter of the universe! I guess I’ll have to drown my sorrows in a big bowl of Purely Decadent coconut milk ice cream and Soyatoo topping.

  • I don’t know what it’s like in New York, but you can blame California’s seeming disinterest in having businesses operate in its state by making it so difficult and expensive to do so. That’s why.

  • We at Lula’s just want to thank you for braving the cold weather to see us and then posting such a wonderful review of our shop. We’re a small business and rely heavily on word-of-mouth and so we can’t express our appreciation enough. Also, to you and all the commenters, the enthusiasm for what we do is one of the main things that makes all of it worth our while. We’re very grateful. Hope you can make it back in soon. Oh and to Betina — we make our coconut whipped cream in-house.

  • I went to NYC at the end of December, before moving to Germany, hoping to experience the amazingness that I’d heard was Lula’s. Well I wasn’t able to, because they were CLOSED when I got there. Bah. And I can’t even get Purely Decadent here. Oh well, someday…

  • I love Lula’s so much! The gal you talked to is Blythe, the owner!

  • This place is out of this world, I was ready to move to New York when I tried it. Whenever I’m back east I always hit up my favorite vegan cupcake place in the US (Sweet Avenue in Rutherford, NJ) and Lula’s, but while the cupcakes can travel, I can’t bring the ice cream back with me on the plane! Come to the West Coast, Lula’s, and you will have to fend customers off with an oatmeal spoon: Scoops runs out of ice cream every night and you’re about fifty times better, so I can only imagine how well you’d do ….
