    chips and mushy peas

ahhhhh…chips and mushy peas. they can be found on practically every street corner in england for just a couple pounds, and are almost always vegan. just stop by one of the many ubiquitous “chip shops” or “kebab houses”, and along with fish & chips, meat pies, and spotted dick, most of them offer some of the greasiest and most delicious vegan food known to man. take this hole-in-the-wall location in waterloo, for instance. chips (or fries, for your septics) were cooked in separate vegetable oil. wrapped up in paper to soak up all the grease, these potato wedges are served with a tiny portion of thick mashed peas. dip the chips in the peas, and you have perfection. this street food should be enjoyed while standing outside in the cold and biting weather….for the optimum experience. x

  • I would literally carry a tiny Heinz ketchup bottle in my coat just in case I come across a bag of this LOVE!!!

  • Oh man, I want this when I visit London in March!

  • i want mushy peas! how do i make this happen? mash up some peas?

  • Chips and mushy peas make the world go around.

    YUM

  • You’re sure they’re vegan? Here in Belgium chips are usually fried in animal fat (preferably of oxes).

  • @brittany: you can buy them at english grocery stores in LA. they are AMAZING.

@Gc: yes, i checked that these were vegan and fried in vegetable oil. everywhere is different though, so i ask every time.

  • how funny! those peas are almost radioactive looking! haha

  • I could eat this every day yum …. also a large pickled onion is nice with the chips and peas …. if you very hungry get a white bread roll and make chip and mushy peas butty mmmmm

  • I really wanted to spoil myself today with a bag of chips. But could i find vegan ones? No!

Unfortunately (and bizarrely) nearly all the chip shops round these parts cook the fish and the chips in the same oil.
I only found one (ages ago) that said they use separate veg oil, but i think some of them will tell you anything they think you want to hear.

Just be careful if yo’re vegan, that’s all i’m sayin.

  • I used to work in a chip shop, the fish is normally fried in the same oil as the chips, but as it´s covered in batter the fish doesn´t usually touch the oil. And the vast majority of fish and chip shops use veg oil, but it´s best to check.
