if you are a vegan hanging out in london, don’t rush over to neals yard salad bar in covent garden. the vegetarian and vegan-friendly cafe sounds like a total win with loads of vegan baked goods, animal-free entrees and a whole juice bar…but when we went, the service was slow and the food was rather meh.

while the cafe is mostly vegetarian, they do have a few vegan options including a vegan pizza. if you read this blog, you know how much we fucking love pizza, so we had to give that a try.

the menu said the pizza came with corn, tomatoes, olives and a vegan mayo type sauce. i assumed the toppings would be in a similar ratio, but when the pizza arrived it had four slices of tomato, four olives and about FOUR CANS of corn on it. seriously, so much corn.

    lots of corn dude!

this pizza just wasn’t good. we were scraping the corn off because there was just way too much of it. note to neals yard salad bar: corn does not make a good cheese substitute.

we also ordered some vegan breaded soy stick thingys that came with a garlic mayo dip. they were pretty good, but a bit on the burnt to a crisp side…plus they took forever to arrive.

neals yard salad bar does have some other stuff on the menu that looks pretty good (including a vegan full english breakfast)…so if you live in london, this place may be worth checking out. if you are just visiting however, there are much better places to eat! stay tuned for more reviews or check out what i’ve said about other places.

  • whoa. that is a buttload of corn!

  • i thought about what i just said and realized how gross it was.

  • There is meat on their menu too! The original salad bar was vegetarian/vegan and fantastic! It’s sold out and the new place is riding on it’s reputation.

  • oh god i ordered this pizza too!! grossss so hard to get through. i really like their vegan ice cream and cakes but their dinner menu is so bad. the neal’s yard cookbook from back in the day was amazing and surely the then writers of it would be dismayed at the selling of meat.

  • I couldn’t agree with you more about Neal’s Yard Salad Bar. On a previous occasion I had had a very nice chocolate cake, so was looking forward to my meal. However, one of my group got served before me despite arriving later. I later discovered that this was because he had been given my main course! I was served with his main course, which was tasteless. By the time I realized this it would have been too late to get a replacement. I told the waiter, who did nothing. When I got the bill I asked that this mistake be taken into account in what I was charged. The waiter said he was unable to help me. I asked to see the manager, but was told by the waiter that I would have to go to him. When I calmly and politely explained the situation to the manager he interrupted me, refused to listen, talked over me and told me that I should have noticed that there were no beans on my plate. He was very agitated, angry and rude. I would certainly not recommend this restaurant to anyone. If you are vegan the available options are very limited and this no longer includes the chocolate cake. The meal came to nearly £20 for 2 mediocre courses and a drink, so is also very poor value. There are lots of vegetarian eateries in the area that understand the concept of customer care, so don’t waste your money here.
